Once everyone was gone, I immediately turned to the others. They all remained silent.
"Do we sit here and still do nothing?" I demanded angrily.
"How many times must I repeat myself, Augustus. We haven't received any instructions," Philomene quipped irritably.
"How long do you think it will be before every single Unknown out there is killed by this...this thing that the humans have? How long Philomene? How long do we 'sit and wait'? How long do we sit by idly and do absolutely nothing?" I demanded.
Philomene's fists clenched angrily.
"Until the Supreme says so," she snapped back.
I shook my head.
"This isn't right. You all know this isn't right."
"What's right is what the Supreme tells us, Augustus," Leona said.
"He will not listen to reason, Leona. Look at his precious face. He's already made up his mind. He's just trying to drag us down with him," Philomene said goadingly.
"Does what just occurred not bother any of you in the slightest bit?" I asked.
"What matters is not what we feel, young Augustus. What matters is what we know. What will work out for the best in the end," Sebastian said.
"And you are telling me that our current course of action is for the best?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Listening to the Supreme has always led to the best outcome in the past."
"What about the future Sebastian, what about right now?"
Sebastian's eyes met mine. Then they glazed over momentarily.
"We face dark times. We're in very dark times right at this moment. Your trying to do things on your own will make no significant difference in the big scheme of things."
"I do not believe you."
"What reason do I have to lie, Augustus?"
"You've never been motivated to do anything with a sense of urgency. I do not know why I even bother to speak to you," I spat.
"You're being unreasonable," Leona said.
"I'm the only one here trying to do my job."
"You're being divisive, Augustus," she continued.
"I'm doing what I know is right."
"So you know more than the Supreme do you? You know more than any of us who've been here much longer than you have?" Leona demanded.
"I was chosen for this job because I was deemed just as qualified as you all. I know the difference between right and wrong. And your complacency with what is happening is downright revolting."
Leona's eyebrows rose at my words.
"Maybe we should all take a breather," Frederick said.
"I'd like to watch this play out," Winston said putting his hands behind his head and leaning back in his chair. He seemed amused by this.
"There is nothing to watch play out. Augustus will remember that his superior is the Supreme and that we do not act without her consent," Philomene said.
She was clearly angry. I watched as her hands began to turn black and her eye darkened, slowly sinking into to her pale flesh.
"It is also our job to watch over Enforcers, Scouts and every single Unknown out there. It is our responsibility to ensure that they can protect themselves from harm. This is why we recruit special Unknowns to train others to control their abilities and keep their powers a secret. It is all the same thing. We are not fulfilling our duties," I said.
