I felt my powers tug and pull as we made our way around the hoard of dead bodies scattered across the streets. It went against everything in my nature to just ignore it, but I knew I had to. Being a healer meant death affected me much more than the average person. Although to actually heal someone, I needed skin to skin contact, that didn't mean that I couldn't feel their life force from afar.
Some of the people we walked past still had life left in them, but I knew that we didn't have time to stop and aid everyone of them. My gut told me we needed to get from out in the open.
"Most of my crew is dead at this point. Between the virus and the humans we haven't fared very well. The few that are left are in very bad shape," she sighed. "I hope they are still alive when we return."
"I will do everything in my power to help them. First we just need to get there."
"Humans have done nothing but bring us pain and distress. What have we done to provoke this?" she waved her arm toward yet another body we passed.
"Nothing. We have done nothing but mind our own business and kept ourselves in check. Yet all it took was one slip up, one tiny little teenage girl and this is our new reality. The war that we spend to much time avoiding," she said bitterly.
The tiny little teenaged girl she spoke of was named Daisy Lynn. Amarande had marked her and chosen her as one of her own. The girl's life was a bit tragic, but everything that had happened was outside of her control. Although her abilities lead to us being exposed, it was largely due to her abusive father.
I could tell by Delaney's tone that she blamed the girl, but really it was not her fault. Still, I had not lost the people closest to me in this war so I supposed if I were in her shoes I probably would have felt the same way.
I eyed her as we continued walking. Her posture and tone exuded leadership and strength. She had a full figure, with a noticeable womanly shape despite all of the gear she had on. Although her brown eyes simmered with emotion they blended in like chocolate drops with her brown hair. All in all she was undeniably attractive.
When we finally reached her hide out it was clear that everyone was dead. Delaney shook her head.
"Everyone. I've lost everyone." She said exasperatedly.
"Not one of my people have made it out alive or safely. Even my boyfriend was captured by the humans," her voice filled with emotion as she closed her eyes. I watched as a few tears escape despite her attempt to maintain her composure.
"All is not lost. We can find him and save him along with the rest who have been captured," I said putting a hand on her shoulder. She shrugged me off.
"You don't understand –," she was cut off by a round of bullets sounding off in the air.
I watched as she put her arms forward and an invisible wave hit me seconds later. When I turned around I saw bullets bouncing off a light purple translucent projection in front of me. For a moment I was confused until I realized Delaney had the ability to create force shields.
Immediately I realized that was likely why se was the one who had survived her group Her abilities gave her an undeniable edge when it came to protecting yourself. In these types of conditions having a strong defense was essential, especially since humans were not only using brute force, but biological warfare against us.
"We need to get out of here before they bring out the big guns. The humans had more than just these little bullets in their arsenal," she shouted over the sounds of gunfire.
"Right. Let's go," I said.
Delaney kept a shield around us as we ran, protecting us from their fire. It seemed like we were home free when a large blast blew through her force field.
