Augustus POV

We managed to escape just in time. I made sure to grab the only pictures I had of my family before I got out. To my surprise, nobody gave me trouble for holding them up over it. I appreciated that.

In the outside world the reality hit. It was just the three of us.

The tides of the war were obvious. We walked down an abandoned street, each of us engrossed in our own feelings.

"So what now?" Delaney asked.

I shrugged and let out a sigh. We'd taken a huge hit on our side. Very soon, very very soon this war would evolve between one against the humans to one against our own kind. Giovanna's purpose was obvious. She intended to fill to hole that the Supreme and the other Court members left.

I was sure that the three of us alone could do nothing against Giovanna. Maybe if Philomene could get close enough she could possibly kill her, but that was a huge maybe and an if.

"Look. I'm a healer. You can create force fields. And Philomene can kill anything she touches. We're a powerful group, but we can't touch Giovanna. It's a simple fact. I'm not sure that I would come out unscathed if I had to face her head on like that again. You would likely end up being killed Delaney. And nothing can kill Philomene, but she'd have to get close enough to do some damage and I doubt Giovanna would let her approach."

"Positivity. I like it," Delaney said.

"Listen, what I'm trying to say is this. We have limited options. We're fighting two battles at once. Not only are we fighting a physical battle, but it's also a battle of ideologies. Both from the humans and from Giovanna. Physically, we can't beat Giovanna. Not alone. Not the way we are now. Ideologically, we might stand a chance. We have to stand together. First we need to get the human problem settled. And we need to hope that Giovanna doesn't make any huge moves before then. In fighting is what got us here. We don't have a single solitary prayer if we remain divided."

"Augustus, I believe at this point we are all on the same page. The others were killed because we refused to see eye to eye. We cannot change the past. But I am here now. You do not need to waste your breath on these spiels," Philomene said, rollling her eyes.

"I think what Augustus is trying to say, is that we can fight the battle from behind the scenes. The three of us combined are basically protectors. We're the ultimate defense. Augustus can heal any injury. I can block any physical attacks. And you can kill anyone with the snap of a finger. Maybe we can't fight Giovanna head on. But if we work together we can protect the people who can and keep them alive until the job is finished," Delaney said, her brown eyes sparkling with renewed vigor.

Philomene gave a thoughtful look.

"So, who is it that we are going to protect?" she asked.

"Daisy Lynn and her new crew, I'm almost certain. But we don't know where she is or how to track her down. Until we can find her, we should be an aide to the last of the Unknowns out there that need saving. The ones at their wits end, using up the last of their resources trying to stay alive and fight against the humans. We help them and we get more information about Daisy Lynn. The Supreme just died. I'm sure that they'll make an appearance soon. They have to," I said.

They both nodded in agreement.

"From Court members to Protectors," Philomene said.

My grey eyes met her dark brown ones. Even Delaney grinned.

"From Enforcer to Protector," Delaney piped in.

I liked the sound of it. It seemed like they did too.
