Jason and I walked through the corridors to where Amarande presided. The only sound was the soft booms of our footsteps on the floor. When we reached her room, my hand paused on the door handle. I wasn't a telepath, but you'd have to be a complete fool to not be nervous when meeting the most powerful being in the universe face-to-face for the first time.
"She is our ally," I said softly.
There wasn't a word or thought that we could hide here. Amarande would not bring us any harm. She was on our side. I firmly believed that regardless of how Jason felt about it. We were in her territory now. If she was going to do something, she would have done it by now.
Jason didn't respond outwardly to my words, but I knew that he heard me. Slowly, I opened the door and walked into the room. It was dimly lit as usual. There was a small lamp on and a few candles burning. The light aroma filled my nostrils and it made me feel at home.
I shut the door after Jason came in behind me. I knew her attention was on us even though we couldn't make out her face.
Giving Jason a small head nod, we walked over to the far corner where she sat in her chair. In her hands was a book and her face was buried deep in it. The pages flipped rapidly. Despite her old age, Amarande loved to read. She often said that there were still plenty of things about the world around us that she did not know. As technology advanced so did our understanding.
I was sure that she could probably write her own book about the universe if she wanted.
She didn't look up as we approached, but we both knew that didn't matter.
"You've done well, young one," she said softly.
"Thank you," I said.
Suddenly, two chairs appeared in front of where she sat.
"Have a seat," she said, never eyes never leaving the flying book pages.
Jason sat down nervously, only after I took my seat. His eyes flickered back and forth between Amarande and me. I had no idea what was going through his head or hers, but I imagined that if she was letting him into her mind he was seeing a plethora of things that few people had seen ever before.
"You told me to find Jason and it lead to me bringing him here. I think you have some things you want us to know that you can only communicate through him," I said.
I saw her nod, her long dark hair falling into her face. In an instant, it was back to where it lie before. If I had blinked I would have missed it.
That was truly how powerful she was. With a telekinetic like Jason, you would have seen the movement - as if an invisible hand had moved the hair. With her, everything was instantaneous. If she thought it then it would happen.
"You think correctly," she said.
Finally, the pages stop turning and the book closed shut.
She looked up at us, her black eyes taking us in. I knew that this was mainly for show - she wanted us to be comfortable. Well, at least a little bit. Every movement she made was a small display of her immense power, but she couldn't be aloof the entire time.
A small smile played with her thin lips.
"I am happy to finally meet you in person, Jason," she said.
"It's...interesting to finally meet you as well," he replied.
He definitely wasn't happy about meeting her so he chose his words carefully.
Amarande's face was young today. Her skin was clear and her hair looked healthy (although she was still pale as ever).
"I am well aware of your feelings about me and my subordinates. Augustus brought you here on my behalf. I know that you do not want to be here. But believe me when I say, that your are a key factor if we are to win this war," she said.
