"April, wake up." I hear Asher say. He's shaking me. I hate it when he shakes me. "What do you want? You know not to shake me Asher."
"Uncle Matt's here."
"Uncle Matt's here?" I say and rush up the stairs before Asher can respond. Out of all of my family members Uncle Matt is my favorite. He's the one who built my treehouse. Uncle Matt and me have a special bond that he has with no one else. He tells me all the time I'm his favorite niece and he says it in front of everyone.
I go to the living room where I hear his voice coming from. I run into the room and barrel straight into his arms. "Uncle Matt! I didn't know you were coming!" I exclaim. He laughs and hugs me back.
"I decided to come pay you all a visit. I miss you to much."
"I missed you too Uncle Matt."
He pulls me back so he can look at me. "You've grown since the last time I've seen you April." He says.
"Yep I have grown quite a bit."
"Do you still fit inside your treehouse?"
"It's a little cozy but I love it."
"That's wonderful Skittles." Uncle Matt calls me skittles. It's a funny nickname.
My mom walks into the room. "Matt, do you want anything to eat?" she asks.
"No Hazel. I'm good but thanks for asking." My mom smiles and walks back into the kitchen. I leave the room to let dad and Uncle Matt talk. I go upstairs where Max is lying. I go to my closet and pull out skinny jeans, a black T-shirt, and a jacket that has little compases all over it. You couldn't tell that they were compases unless you really looked. A glance would make them seem like little flowers.
I sit in my fluffy chair and think about what happened with the remote last night. How had that happened? It was like magic. Would it work again? I look around my room. I hold my hand out and say, "I wish I had my Hunger Games book." All of a sudden my Hunger Games book is in my hand. That was so cool! I had seen it zoom off my bookcase and into my hand. Wow.
I want to try it again but in a different way. I don't hold out my hand this time. I mutter under my breath, "Phone." My phone lifts off my desk and zooms to my hand. This is so neat! It's like I have superpowers or something.
"Football." My football zooms across my room and into my hand. I put out my hand to open the door but then I think of something. I put my hand back by my side and say, "Open door." The door opens. I definitely have superpowers. Does anyone else have this type of magic? Should I tell someone? Maybe I should just keep it to myself for now. But what if someone else has this power and they could help me? I am so confused right now on what to do and what not to do.
I go to the living room where Uncle Matt is. "Uncle Matt, do you want to play some football?" I ask giving him a daring smile. I've been working on my skills so I can beat him. Uncle Matt played football when he was in school. He couldn't do it for a living if he wanted to marry Aunt Darla though. So he does designing buildings for a living. He designs buildings and playgrounds and schools and houses and stuff like that.
Uncle Matt looks up at me. "You bet I do." He says. He gets up and follows me outside. I walk to one side of the yard and he goes to the other. Dad, mom, and Asher sit on the back patio to watch us. Dad is keeping score and will be a referee if we need it. We probably won't though.
I have the ball. I stare at Uncle Matt who's face is focused on one thing only. The ball. I start running heading towards the right like I always do. Like Uncle Matt expects me to because he guards the left side. Then I see him lunge at me but I duck at the last second and run towards the left which is now unguarded.
Uncle Matt chases after me but I know I'm going to make it. I'm almost to the goal. Just a few more steps. ........... Touchdown! I do a little victory dance as Uncle Matt smiles and shakes his head. This is the first time I've ever beaten Uncle Matt.
I throw the football into the air as Dad, mom, and Asher clap for me. The football lands near the side of the house. I run over to get it but then think better of myself. "Football." I mutter and it zooms into my hand. I look around to see if anyone saw me. It doesn't look like they did. They all went inside.
I go inside and to my bedroom. Max is sleeping. I put my football away and then climb onto my loft bed. Max wakes up and gets on the bed with me. He curls up next to me and falls asleep again. "Harry Potter." My Harry Potter book comes off the bookcase and into my hand. I start to read when my door opens and Uncle Matt walks in. He closes the door. Max looks up to see who it is. I set my book down and look at Uncle Matt. What's he doing in my room? Why is he closing the door? Did something happen?
Uncle Matt turns around and looks at me. "We need to talk."
