I wake up to my alarm clock. As I climb out of bed I remember the academy. I'll have to find Coach Chester first thing to tell him that I'm quitting the baseball team. Man, I really don't want to quit. Maybe the academy has a baseball team I can join. I doubt it.
I get dressed in skinny jeans, a black long-sleeved shirt, and a black vest. I put my converse on and go downstairs to eat breakfast.
When I come back up I brush my teeth, rub lotion on my face, then apply powder. I put my hair into a ponytail and grab my book bag to go downstairs.
I say goodbye to mom and dad before I leave. I hop on my motorcycle and then ride to school. Once I get there I park and lock it. Put the keys in my pocket and the helmets in the compartment under the seat. I walk inside and put my book bag away in my locker. I came early so I could find Coach Chester.
I wander around until I find him in the gym. I walk in and he looks up at me. "Roberts, you're here early. What's the matter?" I nervously shift from one foot to the other.
"I'm quitting the baseball team." His face looks shocked.
"Why are you quitting Roberts? You're the best player we've got. Plus you love baseball so why quit?" Coach Chester has his face scrunched in confusion. I guess I could tell him a part truth, part lie. I can't tell him about my superpowers though.
"My parents signed me up for this after school activity and it's on the other side of town. After school I have to get there as fast as I can so because of that I can't be on the baseball team. I'm sorry.". But I mean it is right after school I just hope he believes it. Coach Chester seems to think for a moment.
"Well Roberts, I'm going to miss having you on the team. You keep working at it though because you're already so good. If you keep working at it you will be nearly flawless." He seems to think about something again. He opens his mouth but then he closes it. He opens it and says, "You know what Roberts? I could come give you some lessons when you have free time. To help you get even better. You wouldn't have to pay me either, I'll do it for free. How does that sound?" His face brightens at the idea. It doesn't sound bad.
I'll have to talk with my parents but I would love to. Thanks Coach Chester. And I really am sorry about having to quit. It's torturing me. I'll see you later. I don't want to be late for class." He smiles and waves as I walk back into the hallway and to my locker to grab my books and binders.
Theo sees me and walks up beside me. "Hey. How are you?" He asks.
"I'm fine." I say looking at him and giving a weak smile.
"No you're not. I can tell. What's wrong? You can tell me anything April." Theo says looking at me with his eyebrows raised. I sigh.
"Can you keep a secret?" He nods his head. "No, I mean could you guard this secret with your life if you had too?" I ask him. He nods his head again and says, "April, you're my best friend. I would do anything for you. I'll take this secret to my grave." I smile when he says this.
"Oh so I'm you're best friend now am I?" I ask smirking at him. It's my turn to raise the eyebrows. He looks away red in the face. He turns back.
"Yes April you are my best friend. Out of all the friends I have. None of them is as true a friend as you are and I think that makes you my best friend."
"Ok."
"Now this secret..."
"I have superpowers. I'm quitting the baseball team because after school I have to drive to this academy for people like me. I'll still come to school so I can have a normal education along with it. I'll also be at the academy on the weekends." I look at him and he looks confused.
"So you're quitting the baseball team because you have to go to an academy for your superpowers?"
"That's right."
"How do you have superpowers?"
"Watch this." I look around and see a textbook laying on the floor. I mutter under my breathe so only Theo can hear me. "Textbook." The textbook flies onto my binder. Theo's jaw is hanging open.
I set the textbook on the floor again and we walk to homeroom. "Wow April. I guess I'll see you later then?"
"Yep. See you later."
"Good luck at the academy."
"Thanks." He smiles and walks to his homeroom. I walk in and sit next to Hunter. "Hey." I say as i sit down. He nods his head. Why hasn't he been talking to me? He hasn't answered any of my texts or calls the last few days. I decide to let him tell me if he wants to. I mean I guess I won't tell him my secret either if he's not even going to talk to me.
The teacher gets everyone's attention and turns on morning announcements. Let the day begin.
