Chapter 4 – Why am I always the unlucky one?
“You know, you look really annoyed,” he said, frowning at me.
“Opps, sorry, I can’t help it. Not when you’re next to me!” I snapped and he instantly shut his mouth. Why does he always have to make small talks with me? Does he feel guilty that I have to guide him to school even though I didn’t want to? Well, he should be guilty.
After for a while, he murmured, “I’m sorry.”
I sighed in frustration. “Save it.”
“I know you’re mad that I have to ruin your day like this, but I couldn’t do anything about it as well, my Aunt forced me to go with you. If you’re truly mad, then I’m sorry.” He said sincerely.
“Actually, I do feel that way.” I turned to look at him with a serious expression.
“Then, I’m sorry.”
“I know that it isn’t your fault, so can you stop saying sorry? You’re making me more annoyed.” Gosh, doesn’t he understand that I don’t want to talk to him? Why does his Aunt have to force us to go together so desperately anyway? It’s like she’s setting us up or something. Well, guess what? Her plan isn't working. I’m not going to fall in love with him, or anyone as a matter of fact.
“Okay.”
After the school was in sight, I announced, “We’re here.” The school was considered huge, well; at least it was bigger than all of the other schools.
“This must be a nightmare,” he said softly, still glancing at the school.
“It is.” As much as I hate school, I still had to go. I need to be and act like a normal teenager, and if Aunt Sarah finds out that I didn’t go or skip school for at least one day, she’s going to get mad. Do you know that they’ll call your parents if you didn’t go to school for just one day? It's crazy.
Even though high school is a mess, I still keep a low profile. Not in a nerdy or wearing a hoot kind of way, I just blend in, and it works. It’s better not to be too close to a person, they will cling on you, get in your way. They’ll slow you down.
“Well, good luck. This place is complicated; you might want to ask directions to the people around you.” I smiled at him sweetly.
“Thanks for the tip.” He said with a hint of sarcasm.
“Anytime,” I said, sarcastically.
I walked away and smiled devilishly to myself. At least he’s out of my way now. I could finally be alone without his presence beside me. I looked back at him. There he was, looking like a lost puppy. A helpless one. I didn't know why but I have the urge to help him. Even so, I won't.
Look at him, he’s new here. How could you just leave him like that? You already agreed that you'll guide him around. Why did you just ditch him?
You’re right- No! I shook that thought away. Of course I wouldn’t help him. I’m not here to help people like him.
You’re not that cruel, help him. He doesn’t deserve it. Helping him won’t hurt, right?
I sighed in defeat and walked towards him. He looks at me with his hopeful eyes. I know I shouldn’t be thinking this way, but he looks cute. “I didn’t come here to be friends with you or whatever, I’m just doing the job, got it?”
He nodded, beaming. I guided him to the office. “Miss Sophia!” Miss Sophia looked up to me and smiled. She’s the secretary of the office. “Hey Dawn. What can I help you with?" I pointed my thumb towards him and explained that he was a new student.
Miss Sophia looked at him and started rummaging through the folders. “Name?” She asked him.
“Ash Quinn,” He answered.
She looked through the papers carefully while mumbling some names out. “Ahh, there it is.” She holds up the paper for me and I took it. I thanked her and both of us walked out of the office while I took a look at the papers. "Let's go to your locker first," I said to him.
I looked down at the paper. Locker 96. Oh no, his locker is near mine. Maybe too close to mine. My locker is 89. Just seven lockers down.
Locker 91. 92. 93. 94. 95. 96. “There, your locker’s here.”
I taught him how to unlock and lock the locker very quickly; I didn’t want to waste my time. I also kept a distance from him, he seems to get it, and didn’t come any closer. “Unlock, lock, got it?”
“Yes, thanks Dawn.”
“Whatever.” I waved him off rudely, “Since now you got the paper and directions, you can go on your own now, right?” He took the paper from me and nodded. “Good.” I said and walked away, feeling glad that this was over. I hope I don’t have to do this again.
I went to my Biology class and sat next to the window. It was the best place for me. There’s also no one sitting next to me, which is good because I don’t like people sitting next to me, and I could put my bag there. See how convenient it is?
I was daydreaming, wondering where I should go to kill more vampires. Hmm… There’s a place that might be suitable. As the teacher walks in, I could see someone behind her.
No.
“Everybody in your places, now,” she ordered sternly. After everyone was seated in their places, she cleared her throat, “I have an announcement to make! We have a new student.”
It was him. Why am I always the unlucky one?
“His name is Ash. He came from...” She said, showing him a question face.
“California.” He finished her sentence.
Everybody started talking about him, almost all the girls were gushing about how hot and cute he was. Some of their boyfriends were trying to get their girlfriends’ attention back. Some have already claimed that he was theirs. “Dibs on him!” A popular girl said, turning towards him and batting her eyelashes.
“So, I hope all of you will treat him nicely, alright?” The teacher asked. Everybody nodded. “There’s an empty sit there, you can sit and we shall begin our class.” The teacher pointed to the sit beside me.
No. no. no. Don’t come closer. Don’t you dare!
But he was already coming closer to me and pulling out the chair. “Go sit somewhere else.” I spat, holding the chair back like it was my dear life.
“There’s nowhere else, Dawn,” He said softly. I looked around, and he was right. The class was already full and all the seats were occupied except for the seat beside me.
“Ash, why aren’t you sitting down yet?” The teacher asked, looking at him to me, and then looking at the chair my hands were holding tightly at. I shut my eyes tightly and opened them slowly.
“Fine.” I huffed. I took my bag away from the chair as he sat beside me.
“So here’s the rule,” I started, “don’t talk to me or even act like you know me, got it?”
“Okay,” He said, and I was surprised he wasn’t rude to me back. Other people would have already snapped back at me.
But then again, why am I always the unlucky one?!
Don’t you think that Ash is such a sweet guy and Dawn is so cold-hearted? :P Vote and comment, it’ll mean a lot! Thank you!
