Chapter 28
Liam and Roan fell through the portal and landed on soft grass. The portal door slammed shut behind them and sealed itself. There was no going back now. They both got to their feet and looked around them. Again there were more trees but it wasn't quite a forest. It wasn't nearly big enough. As Liam looked around he heard an irritating buzzing sound he only knew too well. Liam then tapped Roan and pointed upwards. Roan slowly followed his finger. A massive tree stood in front of them, but it wasn't just a big tree. It was three times the size of a normal tree and on one of the branches a massive beehive hung steadily.
"You are kidding me." She said. Liam then looked back at the ground as the sky and sun were making his sight go blurry. As he looked round he saw something very small about a metre away. It had very big ears for a small creature and as he got closer he realised it had a trunk too.
"No way!" He said bending down to the elephant. He picked it up and carried it back to Roan.
"Wow." Was all she could say.
"I think in this place big creatures are small and small creatures are big." He said. She stroked the elephant who curled its trunk round her hand. She smiled and tickled it making it squirm and almost giggle. He put it back on the floor and the elephant waved his trunk before plodding off into the greenery. "Hey look at this." He walked round the big tree and found some wooden steps circling the tree. They had no banister which made them less easy to spot. Roan began to climb them and Liam followed behind.
It was taking forever and they were both getting tired. They decided to stop and rest about half-way up. Roan looked up and sighed.
"A long way to go yet." She said looking at him.
"We'll make it. I just can't see where it is going. It better not be leading to that beehive." He shuddered.
"I hate bees." She admitted.
"Me too." Liam said truthfully.
"We had better not have to search through it, it wont be easy and by the size of the hive these aren't normal sized bees, which means..."
"Not normal sized stings." Liam finished. She nodded and looked up again.
"Come on, best get to the top before it gets dark!" She got to her feet and began marching up the stairs again. Liam hurried after her.
Finally, the stairs ended and they reached a platform. Liam groaned as he saw what was ahead.
"Liam you put the kiss of death on us." Roan said staring at the beehive in front of her. "The key must be in there."
"I hope for our sakes it's not." He moaned.
"Don't say that!" She snapped. She then smiled and made her way over to the hive. There was a hole big enough for her to fit through leading straight inside. Liam came up close behind her as she was about to go inside he put his arm out to stop her.
"I'll go in first. I don't want you to go in and not be able to defend yourself." Liam spoke seriously so Roan did what he said and let him passed. Liam slid through the hole and landed in something warm, wet and sticky. He brought the substance to his lips and didn't even have to taste it before he knew what it was. Honey. Sweet and sickly honey.
"Eugh." He said trying to stand up. Roan then jumped through the hole and missed the honey puddle and landed safely on the hive floor.
"Come on!" She pulled him out and they both made their way along the sidewalks, which edged the honey puddles. Liam soon realised they must be on the honey combs as they were walking in strange, straight, random lines. As they both looked up the hive was swarming with busy bees. These weren't normal sized bees, they were huge! The size of bears.
