"Travis, how about you go for once in your goddamn life?" Scott spat.

It was early morning, and the group was having a meeting in the cafeteria to determine who would be heading out on the supply run. Yesterday it was set as Kirstie and Matt, but last night while Matt was sealing the gate a walker had been able to grab and bite his arm. Watching Travis amputate the arm was horrifying, especially for Mitch, who'd now have to live with the fact that his boyfriend could mutilate a man without batting an eye.

On top of everything else that was going on, that was rough.

First of all, he hadn't spoken to Scott in three days. He'd immediately regretted what he said and did that fateful morning, but how the hell was he supposed to react? His worst fears had been realized in Scott discovering even the smallest piece of his biggest secret. A secret that only Travis knew, and Mitch wanted it to stay that way. Even if it was illogical that the man he despised knew, while the man he considered to be his closest friend didn't.

Secondly, the group was a complete mess. Scott and Travis could never seem to find common ground, which only worsened Mitch's anxiety. Something obviously had happened between Kirstie and Avi, but the specifics of their argument, whatever it was, were unknown. All Mitch knew was they stopped speaking around the same time as him and Scott.

And now with this whole Matt thing, the group really seemed to be falling apart.

Travis was laughing humorlessly at Scott. "You've got to be fucking kidding me. Do you know how many times I've risked my neck for this group? You've gone on a total of one supply run for us. Stop trying to make yourself into the victim, asshole."

"Hey," Mitch said quietly, placing a warning hand on Travis' shoulder, which was quickly brushed off.

"Maybe it's because the one time I went on a supply run, the one time I left, you almost got us all killed!" Scott shouted back.

"Oh you're so right! I forgot that you were the one who kept this group alive for years! Oh wait, that was me. You've only been here for two fucking months."

"Look, let's all just calm down," Avi said diplomatically. Travis turned away, still fuming, lacing his fingers through his hair in frustration and shifting his weight uncomfortably off his bad leg. "It's been a rough couple days, we're all tense. We need to just take a breath."

He turned to Jessica, who was next to him and looking at him with longing in her eyes. The only person who seemed to be unaware that Jessica was in love with Avi was Avi himself.

"Jess, you want to stay with Matt? I know you guys are close, and we're going to need someone to make sure he stays conscious."

"I'll stay," Kirstie said quickly before Jessica had a chance to reply. "I'll stay with Matt."

Mitch thought he noticed a spark of jealousy in Avi's eyes.

"You know what, fine," Scott said after a short pause. "I'll go on the run." His eyes burned into Travis'. "As long as you can hold this place together."

"Where the hell do you get off thinking-"

"I'll go with you," Mitch heard himself say, cutting Travis off. The entire group turned to him in disbelief. Mitch never went on supply runs.

"Mitchell you're not going," Travis started as Mitch grabbed his backpack from beside his feet. "There is absolutely no way-"

"Didn't realize I needed your permission."

Travis' eyes widened. That was the first time Mitch had stood up to him in years. He was too shocked to counter, and before he had a chance Mitch stormed out, followed by a completely dumbfounded Scott.
