Character Summaries

Avi Kaplan - Family man who'd lost absolutely everything in the apocalypse. His biggest fear, and therefore weakness, is losing his mind. Works well with others and knows how to survive.

secret: His, now dead, wife attempted to kill him but her bullet missed, however he couldn't stop her from shooting their daughter and then herself in the head.

Kirstie Maldonado - Strong, independent woman who has learned to survive without the help of others. However she denies her need for not only human interaction, but need for love. Has difficulty moving on from things that have happened in the past.

secret: After traveling alone for weeks with only him, she was forced to shoot and kill her fiancé in the middle of the night; he had been bit the previous day and neglected to tell her, causing him to change while she was sleeping. It was extremely sudden and unexpected, and she never fully recovered.

Scott Hoying - Extremely smart natural born leader. The most driven of the group, since he is literally carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Falls in love easily, and endures a lot.

secret: Originally worked at the CDC, and tells the group although they were able to identify the disease, there is no cure. However the CDC was able to discover a cure, but only enough was made for an injection for only one person, before the attacks at the establishment. He now is the only living human who has access to the syringe filled with the antidote.

Mitch Grassi - His lone fear is what he himself is capable of. Doesn't realize how amazing he is. Too good for the world he's living in. He provides a beacon of light and hope for the others.

secret: The first group he was with consisted of 23 people. But one night at their camp he had a dream they had all been turned, and while sleepwalking he shot and killed the entire camp, excluding his boyfriend. Although after a very long time he regained his will to live, he hasn't slept a full night since.

Kevin Olusola - Fights constantly for his family, however there's only so much he can do. Although he was an extremely devout man preceding the apocalypse, the horrors of the world he is forced into slowly but completely destroy not only his faith but everything he loves.

secret: The only group member with absolutely no secrets, and in turn he is often the first to discover / learn everyone else's.

Easter Eggs

For those of you who don't know what easter eggs are, they're hidden messages or allusions left within either a book or film. There's quite a few in this story that y'all might've missed, so here's a list of all the easter eggs, both obvious and subliminal, that I left in the novel;

Chapter 5 - Scott's Birthday

Probably one of the most obvious, but in case you didn't know, September 17th is Scott's actual birthday.

Chapter 13 - Kevin's Daughter Sariah

A few years ago, during a livestream with the group, Kevin mentioned that if he ever had a daughter, he would name her Sariah, after the flower.

Chapter 13 - Avi's Daughter Rose

I chose the name 'Rose' from Avi's sister's name: Esther Rose Koop. Avi and Esther have always been extremely close, so I felt like it would make sense for him to name his daughter after his sister and best friend.
