"Do you believe in heaven?" Alyssa asked Kevin softly.

It was late night, and the road was rushing by noisily beneath the couple. They were laying, intertwined, in the back of their trailer while Scott drove up front. Avi, Kirstie and Mitch were behind them in the prius. They'd gotten rid of the tesla now that they were down to six.

It'd been a week since the massacre at the prison. Camping had worked for a few days, but the group was in agreement that they needed a more long term shelter. So now they were driving endlessly, day after day, searching for something, anything.

"Well, yes," Kevin whispered back, brushing his fingers across his wife's hip.

"Really?"

"Aly, I'm a Christian. You know how devout I am."

"You were devout a long time ago baby," she sighed, turning and pressing her cheek against his chest.

"So you're asking if I still-?"

"Believe in God?"

"...yes."

"Really?"

Kevin chuckled, and felt his wife's cheeks tighten as she smiled. "Yes, really."

"But how? How can you still believe there's a God? Why would He do this?"

The question was more difficult, and Kevin contemplated his answer for a long time before actually giving it. "I have to put my trust in faith, and faith alone. And that's a very difficult thing to do. I feel like this- all of this- it's our test. Humanity's test. But I won't let this change who I am. I need to continue to believe that there's something else out there, a higher power. I need that, whether it's irrational or not. I need it to keep going."

Alyssa stayed silent for a long time before saying, "Sariah." Kevin's heart sank with deep pain at the sound of his daughter's name. "Do you think she's in heaven, then?"

"I do."

"I wish I had your faith."

Kevin laid a long kiss on the top of his wife's head, taking in the inexplicable freshness of her scent. "Don't worry, love. I have enough faith for the both of us."

"There has to be something," Avi said, wiping beads of sweat from his forehead. It was early next morning, and the group had come to a dead stop in the middle of a highway ridden with broken down cars. It wasn't too difficult to maneuver between them with the working cars to get back on a better road, but it was a good stopping point.

"We're running low on fuel," Scott replied, shaking his head. "Worst case scenario is we keep driving until we run out of gas, and then what? We're stuck in the middle of nowhere with no shelter, limited ammo, and next to no food."

"There aren't really any other options, Scott," Avi sighed

"Avi's right," Kevin agreed. "It's either keep driving or go forward on foot."

Scott sighed. "You're right, of course. I'm just worried. Running out of fuel, that would probably be one of the worst things that could-"

"Shut up," Mitch suddenly said, causing the entire group to freeze and stare at him wide eyed. As far as Kevin knew, he hadn't said a single word since Travis' death, days ago.

"Mitch-?" Scott asked softly, but Mitch only shook his head violently, eyes blank.

"Listen."

The group stayed silent, straining their ears to hear whatever it was Mitch was referring to.
