"I'll go upstairs, look for stuff up there, and you'll stay down here, alright?" Kirstie said quietly, her gun still raised after kicking down the door of the old house.
Her and Jessica were out on a supply run, much to both of their displeasure. Out of everyone, there wasn't anyone Kirstie couldn't stand less than Jessica. Especially these days, Jessica seemed to hate her more than usual.
"Sure," Jessica said coolly, turning the corner without another word.
Kirstie made her way upstairs, only having to take out two especially slow biters who were practically falling down the stairs already. She looked for a pantry, which she knew was a longshot, and of course didn't find one. She then made her way into one of the bedrooms, in hopes of fresh, or at least somewhat fresh, sheets. Hers had torn the night before.
She heard the biter inside the closet, heard its fingernails scraping at the wood, but decided to ignore it. She didn't need to waste ammo.
Just as she was stripping the bed she heard a sharp noise behind her. Kirstie whipped around, gun at the ready.
Except it wasn't a biter she saw, it was Jessica. She realized the sound she'd heard was the click of Jess's gun as she turned off the safety. And now she was aiming her gun at Kirstie.
"What the fuck?"
"Shut up!" Jessica screamed, and Kirstie noticed her hands were shaking. "Put down your gun. I said put it the fuck down!"
Mind whirring, Kirstie laid down her gun. She wasn't panicked, and she knew her expression remained calm. The anger bubbling inside her trumped any fear.
"Jessica, what are you doing?" Kirstie asked levelly.
Jessica was clearly twice as nervous as Kirstie, her hands shaking and tears forming in her eyes.
"I have to do this."
"No, you don't."
"Yes I do!" Her voice broke. "He's in love with you, you stupid bitch!"
Kirstie raised her eyebrows in confusion. "Matt?"
"Avi! He's supposed to love me. He would love me if it weren't for you. He said so himself. If it weren't for you, he'd love me." Tears were streaming down her cheeks.
A plan began to form in Kirstie's head. Slowly she began walking toward Jessica.
"No, Jessica. He wouldn't."
"Shut up! You bitch I'll kill you! I have to kill you!"
"Put the gun down, Jessica." She was inching ever closer.
"I HAVE TO DO THIS!"
Kirstie's chest was now up against the barrel of the gun. She stared into Jessica's bloodshot, crazed eyes.
"Put the gun down," Kirstie said one last time, barely above a whisper.
Jessica let out an agonized scream, and Kirstie watched as her finger pulled down on the trigger.
It was fast. But Kirstie was faster.
Just as Jessica pulled the trigger and the crack of the gunshot erupted throughout the small room, Kirstie moved in just the right way as to avoid the bullet. Within the same millisecond she pulled the pocketknife out from her back pocket and drove the blade up into Jessica's stomach.
Jessica gasped, dropping the gun and instead holding the knife that was now inside of her. Blood began to drip from the wound.
"This was you," Kirstie said, finally shaking as she realized what she had done. "YOU MADE ME DO THIS!" Hot tears poured from Kirstie's eyes as Jessica fell to the floor in front of her.
