"How in hell did you find us?" Avi asked Scott as the group trekked back up the stairs to the main floors of the school. The bruising on his face made him practically unrecognizable.

"We walked on the main roads toward the village until we saw this place, noticed cars in the parking lot. So we headed inside, heard voices coming from the basement. It was complete luck, we had no idea ya'll would be here. What happened?"

"We got to the pharmacy," Avi explained, "but before we could get the medicine someone knocked us out. We woke up down there, in separate rooms. I was tied to a chair, and they asked me for information about ya'll. They wanted to know where you were, how many of you there were. I didn't give them anything, but then they brought Kirstie in, turned the gun on her. I had no choice, I told them everything. I'm so sorry."

Scott had noticed Kirstie look toward Avi with confusion in her eyes, but the look was so brief that Scott might have imagined it. He shook his head, knowing it was nothing.

"You said it yourself, you had no choice," Scott reassured him, placing a hand on his shoulder. Avi gave him a smile and nod.

By then they'd made their way back outside, the sun just beginning to set. Kirstie and Avi both stepped into the fresh air, taking deep breaths and holding one another's hands.

After a moment Kirstie turned toward Mitch. "Thank god you're better."

"Kevin saved my life," Mitch smiled.

"Amoxycillin saved your life, not me," Kevin replied modestly.

"Always knew you were a great doctor," Avi said to him.

Kevin laughed. "Well, as a great doctor I'm going to have to treat your face before it gets infected. We'll make our way back to the farmhouse for tonight, and I'll clean you up."

Scott stared at gorgeous sky above him, the crackling of the fire filling his ears. Power had gone out a few years ago, and the the lack of light pollution had caused the night sky to be breathtakingly beautiful ever since. Now they could see the entire galaxy, see further than they ever had before. To Scott, it was like a singular piece of glass on an otherwise sandy beach; it's beauty was a rarity, especially in a world as horrible as this.

Thinking of beauty made Scott turn his head toward Mitch, whose twinkling eyes were focused on the fire in front of them. He was wearing a light brown button up, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His hair had grown out a lot, beginning to sweep downward choppily across the middle of his forehead.

Scott needed so badly to be able to hold him, kiss him, love him the way he deserved to be loved, but for some reason the two still weren't together. It'd been a week since Mitch had recovered, since they'd found Kirstie and Avi and had gotten back on the road. Scott and Mitch were still talking, flirting everyday, but for some reason neither had made a move. But Scott knew he couldn't force himself to wait much longer.

However Scott also knew that if he wanted to be with Mitch, he'd have to tell him about the antidote.

Just thinking about the small 6oz bottle, the bottle filled with the solution that could instantly cure anyone who'd been bit, caused a massive weight to press down on Scott's chest. Knowing he was the one person left who singlehandedly had the ability to replicate the solution and save the entire human population? Stress didn't even begin to describe that feeling.

He needed to tell Mitch.

"I'm glad a met ya'll," Kevin suddenly said, cutting through the silence. The groups eyes all drifted toward him in surprise. He laughed half-heartedly, shrugging. "I've never gotten sentimental. I feel like now's a good time." He took a deep breath "I just want you guys to know, if I hadn't met y'all, I wouldn't be here. I truly believe that."

"We go through everything together, we're with each other constantly," Avi added quietly, almost to himself. Scott watched him look toward Kirstie, watch him take her hand in his. "For good and bad."

"Yeah," Kirstie said softly, smiling at him. "And thank god for that."

"I think that it was all for a reason too," Scott added. "Because when we all came together, and it happened, it just felt so right. Ya'll helped me survive, and I feel like, or at least hope, I've helped you survive in turn. I'm so grateful for that." He turned. "What do you think, Mitchie?" he prompted softly.

"I don't know," Mitch shrugged, giving him a small smile. "I feel like we've come to a really fluid way of working. We've survived, together." His gorgeous eyes burned into Scott's. "And that's a really beautiful thing."
