Kirstie glanced one last time toward Mitch, who was lying underneath a tree beside the large white house, a gun in his frail hands. Any time he tried to stand he broke into another horrible coughing fit, so the group would have to clear out the farmhouse without him.
Scott and Kevin had already gone in front, and Kirstie could hear the echoes of their gunshots from inside. Avi had grabbed her hand, and the two of them traveled to the back, kicking the door down and rushing in as well.
Immediately three walkers had surrounded them, but they were easy to kill, and within seconds Avi and Kirstie had shot them and begun to make their way upstairs, continuing to clear out the house quickly. They could hear Scott and Kevin still roaming around on the first floor.
"It's a nice place," Avi said quietly after they'd shot the last of the walkers, their guns still raised as they walked cautiously around the second story. "I've always wondered what it would be like to live in a house like this."
"Me too," Kirstie replied. "This feels like the type of house I'd want to move to after all my kids grew up, once I retired..." her voice trailed.
Avi smiled goofily at her, instantly lightening her mood. "Well, once we wipe out the entire walker population and the world goes back to normal, we'll move here!" Kirstie giggled.
He was obviously being sarcastic, but Kirstie couldn't help to envision it. Envision a life where they weren't constantly on the run, where she actually could do the things she loved, be with the people she loved. A life where she would never have to worry about whether or not she'd live to see tomorrow. A life where she could marry Avi Kaplan, where they could have children, grow old together, truly live. It was a happy thought.
And that's when she realized that, for the first time, she was envisioning a life with someone other than Jeremy. Maybe she really was finally moving on.

"I'll go, I'm going right now," Scott was saying, his voice ridden with panic. He'd been by Mitch's side all night while Mitch continued to cough up blood, and now that it was early morning he was in a state of complete distress, demanding he go on a supply run alone.
"Scott, no," Kevin said. "You need to stay with him, in case anything happens."
"We'll go," Kirstie suggested, nodding her head toward Avi. "Scott, Kevin's right. You need to stay with him, you need to be here."
Scott was nodding, his eyes still crazed with worry. Kirstie had never seen him so frantic before, not ever in all the years she'd known him. He obviously cared about Mitch more than anyone else, including himself. If Mitch actually died, she didn't think he'd be able to continue.
"Okay, okay," Scott was saying to himself as he turned, heading back into Mitch's room.
Kevin turned to Avi and Kirstie, handing them a sheet of paper with a single word scribbled on the front.
"It's definitely pneumonia. That's the medicine he'll need, you'll find it in the pharmaceutical section of most drug stores. I've been in this area before, I actually know where we are. I'm almost positive there's a small town about 5 miles south of here. It's a long walk, but it's not horrible. If you leave now you should be back by noon at the latest."
Kirstie and Avi nodded as they grabbed their guns, and Kevin wished them good luck, giving each of them a hug. And then they were off.
They'd both gotten a somewhat decent nights sleep, despite Mitch's chronic coughing, so the walk was much easier and faster than expected. They made small talk most of the time, commenting on the simple things and once again talking about their past lives. Now that they both knew about one another's past relationships, it was even easier to speak openly. Kirstie talked about the good and the bad of her relationship, and Avi did the same.
