"Why did you cover for me?" Kirstie asked quietly. They were laying together in their tent, Avi's fingertips running up and down Kirstie's leg. She could feel his warm breath on the nape of her neck, causing a small smile to tug at her lips.
"What do you mean?"
Kirstie turned so their faces were inches apart. "When the rest of the group found us last week, you told Scott that you'd been the one to give up the farmhouse. You didn't have to cover for me. They deserve to know that I was the coward, not you."
"You are not a coward," Avi replied, stroking her cheek. "You were put in a position that no one should ever be put in. You did what you had to do."
"I could've given them a fake location," Kirstie replied, shaking her head and snuggling into Avi's bare chest. "I could've-"
"You were under pressure, you can't expect yourself to be able to think clearly in a situation like that. And everything turned out okay. Don't beat yourself up over this, Kirst."
Kirstie sighed, but smiled. "What would I do without you?"
Avi laughed softly, her favorite laugh. "You don't ever have to worry about that, Kirst," he said with a smile before pushing his lips against hers.
Immediately Kirstie tangled her fingers in his long hair, earning herself a throaty moan. In response he nibbled her lip, pulling it gently as they both deepened the kiss, sitting up slightly on the deflated mattress. Avi moved his hands down to her waist, and she rocked her hips against his slowly. He smiled into the kiss, causing Kirstie to smile in turn.
"Can I ask you something?" he breathed, lips still brushing against hers.
"Anything."
Avi pulled away from her, viridescent eyes staring at her lips. Kirstie's heart pounded so furiously in anticipation she wondered if Avi could hear it.
"That scar over your lip," Avi ran his thumb across it. "Where did you get it?"
Kirstie suppressed a smile. "Well, I got it when all of this first started. I was out on a supply run alone. I got ambushed by a pretty large group, I'd say there were around ten men, all massive. They surrounded me, took everything I had. They were asking me questions about my people, yelling at me to answer them, but I kept my mouth shut. So the biggest guy took a knife and put it up to my lips and..." Kirstie let her voice trail.
Avi's eyes were wide with anger. "Are you serious?"
"No."
"Oh my god, babe- wait what?"
Kirstie finally let herself laugh, placing her hands on Avi's chest to stabilize herself. A smile was beginning to form on his lips.
"That didn't happen," Kirstie said between giggles. "It sounds pretty badass though, doesn't it? No, the real story's pretty lame. A dog scratched me when I was a kid, that's all."
Avi was shaking his head, his smile now apparent. "I hate you."
"You love me."
"I know."
Once again they locked lips, one short yet meaningful kiss, but this time it was Kirstie who pulled away.
"Now it's my turn."
"What?"
"To ask a question."
"Anything," he grinned, repeating her own words.
She took a long breath, growing serious. "You told me you had a thing with sanity, which I knew. But you never told me what happened to your family."
