Star got home at exactly 4:32 pm that day. I know. I was waiting.
Toffee had made a timely exit about two or three minutes before but I could care less about him. I ran out of my room, leaving my wand rolled up in all my covers. And my pillows. And tied with some rope. In my closet.
Man, I need a safe.
"Star!" I scream when she got home. She looked up as I jumped down the stairs and throw myself into her arms. I grab them tightly, rapping my arms around her back and hoping she never had to leave. I nestled my head on her shoulder as my mind flooded with thoughts of her leaving without even caring.
Or her getting mad at me for not telling her about the wand.
The wand. I hope nothing happens to it upstairs. What if she does find it!? Will she take it!? What if something happens!?
"Marco?" She begins to try to pull away and I'm snapped back to reality, abruptly letting go. She looks into my brown eyes, which were red due to all the crying I did.
"Yeah?" I respond, clearing my throat.
"Y-You hugged me." She says it like something's wrong but I could not figure out for the life of my what it is.
"Yeah." I respond. "Why wouldn't I?"
"Well..." She twirls her hair and bite her lip. "I figured you'd be mad because I didn't do anything earlier to help you."
"Oh..." I clasp my teeth. She didn't. She just sat there. I felt a tang of anger towards her, like I probably should. But instead I say happily "But I don't care! I'm just glad you're home."
She smiles and as she grabs a snack, she explains how she told my parents and they called in to say I was sick. What a nice thing, it would suck to be marked down as skipping class because of something so stupid as what happened.
But no matter, I'm home with Star and my wand is safely upstairs.
I hope.
"Hey." I turn around and begin to leave. "I'll be right back. Find a movie or something."
"Kay?" She says as she watches me march up the stairs, taking it two steps at a time. As I round the hall and make it to my room, I open and close it quietly as possibly. My heart pounds through my ribs as I open the closet. I grab the pair of dimensional scissors and open them like a saw. My hands wrap around the rope and line the blade of the scissors with the fraying rope. I could feel the hair on my forehead begin to mat down. I would untie it but that would take too long. I need to see if it's in there. My mind spazzes. What if it wasn't there!? My throat dries as I cut through the final rope. I felt almost emotionally attached to this thing, this random object. As I go to unwrap the giant comforter, my whole body gets surrounded by an aura of fire. I clench my teeth, sweat building up. My breathing got hot and muffled and the room was slowly creeping into darkness. My eyes peer at the blanket and see a green light pulsing inside of it, like it was suddenly transparent and it's heart was open. I grab it and try to rip it but it was smooth and I couldn't snap it open like they do in the movies. So as the room begins to get darker and darker I feel my breathing getting deeper and my chest beginning to grow a tight band around it. I cough and try to clear my throat until I finally find the edge and rip it open. My pillows fly away in a swirl as he blanket unwinds and my vision returns to normal. My breathing calms, and my eyes clench to the soft green. The wand seems to be smirking at me.
"What!?" I snap angrily, my body cramping a little. The green dies down and I scoff, grabbing it. I go to leave my room, my hand hovering inches from the door nob but I freeze. Star can't know I have this, but if I know where she is I don't have to know where this is. Right? She can't take it and she can't leave. Perfect. She can't get it if she's not near it. But... Other people could take it.
So I place it in a shoebox under my bed and push my way down the hall. The world was dim but not black. My soul, my very essence was in that wand, or so it felt. Whatever happened to it would happen to me. As I lean over the loft railing, Star pointing excitedly at the TV as soon as our eyes lock.
"What?" I say as I skip the last few steps. I round the railing and see the tv blasting Teen Titans. Not the crappy remake, the real deal.
"It's on!" She pats next to her, a bowl of popcorn with candy corn and chocolates chips mixed in. I jump onto he couch and sit right next to her. We both laugh and shout excitedly at the TV for a solid two hours. Fun times, except for the annoying fly that would keep circling me. And every time I would hit it out of the air my hand would be filled with pain and my brain would snap a little, reminding me about the wand. And then a new one would come and the same thing again and again.
"I'll be right back." I shout as I sprint up the stairs after hours of cartoons. Star shouts something but my door was already slammed shut. I angrily push the entire bed away from the wall to reveal two show boxes, some old stuffed animals, a book or two and a whole lot of dust. I let out a sneeze as I grab the box with the wand in it.
I check, make sure it's there, and then go back downstairs.
"You good, Marco?" Star asks, the tv paused.
I nod and join her back on the couch. "You hungry?"
"A bit-"
"Good!" I hop up and make my way to the kitchen. "I'll make dinner."
"Uh-"
"But first," I scratch my head, pretty hard I guess. "I'll be right back."
"What- again?" Star said as I pass by and make my way up the stairs.
"I just forgot something." I shout. "My phone!"
"Uh..." She calls after me but I close the door to my disheveled room and make my back to my wand in my shoebox. I check, it's there.
And so I go back downstairs.
"You good?" Star asks as I sit on the couch.
I scratch my wrist, and let out a small laugh. "No- I mean yeah. I'm good."
She eyes me, and hits play on the tv.
"Smooth." Toffee laughs. I looks around but he's not here.
"Shut up." I mumble, returning my visit to the tv.
"Huh?" Star looks at me with her big blue eyes.
"Nothing." I smile unconvincingly, getting up. "You want dinner?"
"Yeah." She repeats, a tad annoyed.
I reach the fridge. "Yeah. Uh... Burgers? Meatloaf? Chicken? ... No... We only have leftovers I guess."
"It's cool Marco." I turn to see her pull out her wand and glide over the kitchen. "I got us covered. I'm thinking... Chinese!"
As she tries her hardest to make a proper American-Chinese dinner with magic, I chew on my cheek.
What a waist of all that power
My stomach clenches. "I'll be right back."
And I make my way back upstairs, Star groaning in confusion.
