The kid clears his throat and says with a voice like silk; "Once upon of time-"
"No." I say, my eyes still closed as I let a breeze blow my hair. "Don't start your story like that."
He scoffs. "Well how would you start it?"
I shrug. "I dunno. I don't know the story."
"Then how'd you know I started it wrong?"
"You can't start with that. You have to start something that grabs your audiences attention or they start to think about the story too much before it even starts."
He sighs. "Alright then. Here it goes.
"There was a princess from the kingdom Mewni. On Mewni, monsters and Mewman's were sworn enemies, separated by a wall put here after a huge massacre. The Mewman's had built a civilization while the native monsters resided in the forest. The princess was a fair maiden who had everything her heart desired. She actually couldn't find a thing to complain about. Her parents let her roam the kingdom, she had a magic wand she could use as she pleased and she was naturally fit to be a queen. She had no troubles."
I yawn. "Boring. You really are bad at telling stories. People shouldn't have no flaws, it's uninteresting."
"You want to tell the story, kid?"
"No. I don't have any stories worth telling. You can just continue."
He clears his throat like an old scholar. "As I was saying; her name was Moon."
"Moon." I think. "That name sounds kinda familiar, I guess."
"She was the queen of a magnificent kingdom. She enjoyed sneaking away from her guards and sliding just beyond the kingdom walls to a small river with a massive silver acacia tree growing out the side of the bank. She would sit on the roots of the tree that slipped through the grassy ground and read away her worries. Her eyes were filled with wonder but sharp. She could tell there was a set of curious eyes following her. They were devious and golden, and belonged to a monster. The monster was a giant and cunning lizard, he was known as the immortal monster, but moon didn't know that yet.
'I know you're there.' Moon announced as she flipped the pages in her book.
The monster was shocked. 'I didn't think you would.'
'What brings you here, Monster?' Moon rebutted.
'What brings you here? Your kingdom is behind those walls. This is our domain.' He snapped as he crosses his green arms over a black and pink shirt. It had skulls on it's shoulder.
'What a one-minded thought.' Moon closed her book and turns to the lizard monster.
'And so the pot called the kettle black.' Toffee remarked
Moon snickered, 'I guess, seeing my history, it's a fair comment to make'
Toffee was startled by the princess's remark, he had never thought of Mewman's as anything but murderers. He was shocked to find that she was different than other Mewman's, she knew and accepted their past.
"And so their friendship blossomed. Moon and Toffee began to see each other more and more often, that tree was their little oasis away from the prejudice falling between Mewman and Monsters. They spent time in the bridge talking and on the shore they skipped stones until the sun would be almost gone.
'So what do you do for fun?' The princess once asked several months after the two had met.
'I like to watch the fairies and birds fly through the canopy.' Toffee responded.
The princess let out a breath of disappointment, 'You're boring, Toffee. The only thing special about you is your name.'
'It's not even my real name.' The monster confessed.
'It's not?' Moon snickered. 'What is it then?'
Toffee snarled and regrettably answered, 'Fredrick.'
The princess dragged her hand through the water, 'I won't call you that if you don't want.'
Toffee nodded.
Soon, the princess and the monster grew even closer. The princess began to fight off suitors who came for her hand, including a fellow named River. He was also infatuated with the maiden and would try to follow her every day. But the only time he's ever succeeded at doing so, Toffee was there to scare the poor boy away. The two were star-crossed lovers, destined to be apart but bonded by the red ribbon of fate and the demon blood moon. That is, until one fateful night-"
"I hope you know it's just Romeo and Juliet." Turn my head and scowl at the guy. "Man, can't you tell an original story? If I wasn't so empty I'd probably tell one."
He huffs, his black hair being thrown back. "One evening night the princess was on the balcony-"
"See? It is Romeo-" I start.
"AND she stared at the setting sun, wand in hand. She found herself glancing at the forest, a sense of sadness washing over her for the downgraded and oppressed monsters.
'M'lady!' Toffee called to the maiden. He had scaled the towers side and had jumped onto the balcony with her.
'Oh Toffee,' Moon guffawed. 'You sly devil. But, what brings you here to the inner village.'
'I was wondering... If you had any food!' Toffee confessed, starving was a normal feeling for monsters.
Moon chuckled. 'We're about to go for supper! I'm sure we'll have enough food for you as well, unless Baby comes.'
'You want me to-' Toffee stuttered at the princess. Moon grasped his hand and whisked him to the dinning room, where her parents already sat.
'Mama.Papa.' Moon formally bowed. 'This is my good friend, Toffee!' The King and Queen scowled at the monster as he sat down with the formal family. Moon sat with a nervous smile on her face. The dinner continued late into the night with idol chatter between the parents and their daughter but Toffee was distinctly left out of the bonding.
Until...
'So,' the Queen begun. 'You're a monster.'
'Mama,' Moon hissed.
'And when do you plan to attack us?' The king added on.
'Never!' Toffee responded in shock. 'Your majesty, why would I attack such an awe full power? It sickens me to think that you would think that low of me.'
'I always think that low of monsters.' The King retorted. 'Anything else would have me living in a fantasy where monsters aren't retched beasts.'
Toffee gritted his teeth, 'Now wait a moment! What gives you the right to speak about me like that!?'
The king chuckled. 'Is it wrong to command a dog to sit without saying please?'
'It's not wrong, it's just disrespectful.' Toffee rose to his feet.
The king smirked at the lizard. 'Sit.'
Toffee felt a sting of reality snap through his heart at that moment. For over a year the princess and him had stayed at Moon's get-away spot untouched by society. But Toffee got it now, he understood the severity of this situation. He snarled at the royalty and pulled the tablecloth from the elegant set up. Dishes and silverware crashed and the reptile shot from the room.
Moon glared at her parents, standing with gusto and left well noticed by basically the whole kingdom. She left the castle on foot, her piggoat Chauncey right by her side. She traveled fast to get back to the secret spot. She arrived to see Toffee was watching the tree burn, a lot torch in hand.
'Toffee what are you doing!?' The princess cried as she ran over to the shining acacia tree and screamed at the monster.
'This tree is nothing but a beacon of false hope!' The monster accused, a certain glisten in his eyes. 'Mewman and Monster's will never be equal Moon! Don't you get it!?'
Moon stared at the burning tree as it pops and cracks. she had loved this spot for all those years and her eyes built with tears. She screamed at the monster with desperation, 'It doesn't matter what people think! I know who you are! I understand you! Doesn't that count for anything!?'
'It counts for nothing!' Toffee screamed as he threw the torch into the fire. 'You don't understand! Even if you confess your love and admiration for me we will never be equals! You think Mewni is going to accept a monster as their king because the queen really really likes him!?'
'Yes! We can make this work!' Moon was in tears.
'Get out of this fantasy where everything works out if doesn't and it never will! I'm a monster and you're a Mewman, we need to be separated!'
'I don't want to be separated!'
'Well the world never gave a rats ass about what you want! You're stuck in this crazy reality where Monster's aren't treated like feral animals! Well we are! You and you're people made us this way!'
'We can fix that!'
'You stupid prick in no timeline will this ever work out! I'm a feral monster as far as these people are concerned so I guess I'll start acting like one!'
'Toffee stop it! You don't have to do this!'
'Oh I do!' Toffee screamed at the girl and ran at her, teeth and claws bared. Moon dodged his attack, just nearly avoiding getting sliced by his claws. She ran across the bridge and back through the woods as the golden eyed monster ran on all fours, his tail swung behind him. She had made it to a clearing at the top of a cliff and spun around to see Toffee emerging from the trees, a look of pure anger was in his eyes.
Moon help put her wand with shaking hands and Chauncey stood next to her. Toffee was breathing heavily, his mind completely one tracked. Without any warning he dodged at her. Not going for the kill but hoping to scar her enough to bring her back to reality. A reality where when something is cut, their blood isn't filled with rainbows and doesn't sparkle, it's a solid and deep maroon that stains your mind.
Moon dodged his attack and leaped high above the tree line, along with her pig goat. She landed on him just as Toffee launched himself in the air as well.
'I'm sorry,' Moon whispered to herself as her wand sparked a ferocious blue, 'But as much as I love you I have a kingdom to protect.'
The beam went off and Toffee had put up his hand to stop it from hitting his face out of reflex. It sliced off Toffee's finger. He felt part of himself disappear, the part filled with love and compassion. The part of joy and happiness with Moon. He fell to the ground where his soul shattered, leaving a man filled with revenge.
No one knows why Moon played that card, why she stole his compassion." He sighs as his voice changes from the seriousness tone of the story back to the light airiness it had before. "Do you have a guess, Marco?"
I thought for a bit, the question was unexpected after all. I sigh and finally answer, "Moon probably wanted to take away his power. Toffee seemed to live through a purpose of love, I guess."
"Love?" He responds.
"Yeah. He loved Moon, which is what put him in a position of facing reality. Without any compassion, Toffee would be blinded just like Moon was. Moon was blinded by love, Toffee by hate. Either way, they'll both see reality in a distorted way. Toffee lost his advantage after that, and so his power was gone."
The guy never did say if I was correct, the story never had an ending either. The conversation had subsided and we both enjoyed the sweet day together. I didn't feel like moving or talking, I just wanted to stay here and do nothing.
"Just so you know." The boy shifted awkwardly, his voice cracking through the silence. "Toffee's finger was but into Moon's wand through some dark magic, woven into her past like thread. But it's not like getting it back will fix anything for Toffee, it'll basically just get rid of the permanent reminder of the past for him, maybe make him even more crazy."
"Yeah well," I force every word to leave my mouth something nocking on the inside of my skull, "Good thing it's all just a story."
I pull my mind away from the thoughts so I could enjoy the beautiful day.YAY THEORY CHAPTER AS FUCK
