I can't say my weekend was pleasant.
By Monday morning I guess Star was really confused by my jumpiness. It want my fault, I had to check to make sure my wand was okay and still there! Sunday night I did catch her mentioning something to my parents about me. They both laughed it off, thank god. But I think I might have put a dent in my relationship with Star. But I didn't care. However when I did start to care Toffee was there with a swift speech and a swarm of flies to remind me of what's important.
I won't lie, he had some valid points.
But I could feel my whole world spinning off the axis while I say outside waiting for the bus two hours earlier than it should arrive. I was all ready for school, I wore a nice white collard shirt, sorta formal but less so with the sleeves rolled up and black shorts. Not to mention the heavy bags under my eyes while I watched the slow rising sun. I haven't slept all weekend, nighttime was training time and I wasn't eager to get back to those horrifying nightmare anyways.
I'm snapped back to reality by the smell of smoke. It was faint, but it reeked of burning plastic and wood. A house maybe?
I dig around my bag until I find my wand at the bottom and I take off down the street. Being discrete or not about this item, someone could be on fire! I might be losing it a bit but Marco Diaz is no coward!
I turn the corner of a random street to see fire trucks and a huge fire smashing through a house. Sirens blare and screams crack windows, a crowd beginning to form. I push my way down the the road, my legs feeling heavy.
"Excuse me." I push through the crowd, people screaming at me to get back.
"MY CHILD!" A woman screams. I turn in a flurry of light to see a woman, blond hair all frizzy and green eyes locked in a panic. "MY BABY'S STILL IN THERE! LEO DO YOU HEAR ME!? BABY MOMMY'S COMING!"
"Woah!" A firefighter grabs her shoulder and pulls her back. "We'll go in."
Her eyes burst into tears. "My husband... I th-thought he was-s home I thought... I thought... I thought he had him!" Her mouth gapes weirdly as her saliva sticks it together in a web of tears.
"Sir the fire-" the firefighter starts but his eyes catch the woman's. "- it's uh... A code yellow belly."
No need for weird code names dude, we all know it's not good.
So I plaster a smile on my face and take off towards the house. People shout but I hold out my arms and I feel like I'm flying. My shirt rips at the warm wind as I let out a laugh, a smile cracking on my face.
"Mystique waterfall!" I shout as I fling the wand in the air. I land in a superhero landing, and I look up and the fire is gone, the water falling through the windows and doors. I burst into the house, splashing through the ankle-high water to see a little boy in footy pajamas not moving. He lies on his back, ears and most of his body covered by the water. He was coughing a little and my head spins with what I just did. To put out the fire... I didn't think clearly. I just drowned him.
"Move!" I'm shoved into a wall as a paramedic comes in and begins CPR. She gets his head back and begins the compression.
"I'm..." at a loss for words
"CEIZER! POLONY! GET IN HERE AND HELP ME GET THIS BOY BREATHING AGAIN WE CAN SAVE HIM!" She keeps going with the mouth to mouth and whispers in between. "I hope." People burst in and I begin to walk out the front door. I'm caught with all the stares of the crowed, the cafeteria having nothing on this. My fave white white, my stomach yearned to be empty.
"MONSTER!" The mom shouts at me. "YOU JUST MURDERED MY SON YOU MONSTER!! YOU ARE A KILLER GET OUT OF HERE!" The crowd follows with their own despicable words and harsh tongues. My mouth was stuck together like glue as people push by me. My legs slide back and soon I'm bolting through the backward and all the trees and such, my Vans getting covered in mud. Three backyards and a block later I'm back to my position on the steps. My face's burning red, so many salty tears crawling down my face the ocean is jealous.
"Quite heroic." Toffee admires. I look up with a growl. My tears disappear as he shrugs, joining me on the step.
"You sure?" I mocks eyes looking up in sarcasm. "I don't know maybe I should have held the kid for ransom, maybe try to crush him to death in a glass box!" My voice was lathered with sarcasm.
"It was crystal."
I scoff.
"Still testy, alright." He sighs. "You don't have to trust me, although I don't see any reason not to-"
"Well-"
"I'm not done." He barks sternly.
"Okay." I grumble. "Moody."
"You do need someone to help you, though."
"Huh?"
"You may not realize this but I know that wand better than you do. Well obviously a ferret would know it better than you-"
"Point!"
"I know you. I know what you're going through. And I know that. And... I'm the only one you can talk to about this."
"I..." Sighing, my eyes catch the sun stretched in the sky. "You're right."
"Good boy." He messes up my hair and I slap his hand back. He lets or a content laugh and leaves and I curl up in my damp clothes until the heat dries them. The wand is under my bag, my fingers touching the stone end of it. My mind wonders until I'm back at the house, back when I first go there. I dive into the flames without magic. In that timeline I'm burnt to a crisp. I go to another timeline where I didn't do anything. The house collapsed on the kid. I found I was able to travel to a timeline where the mom actually had her kid with her. In that one the tree next to the house caught on fire and fell on them. So it goes. If only everyone could see the other eventualities. Then maybe their harsh words wouldn't have been spoken, they would have praised me like they should have.
"Marco?" Someone says. Reality forms itself and I'm staring at the desolate street once again. I turn my head to see my mom staring at me, worried.
"Yeah?" I pull my bag so it  blocks the view of my wand from her even more. It was lightly glowing, nodding respectfully at me, telling me I was right. They shouldn't have yelled at a hero like me.
"You ready for school?" She asks like someone right before a jump-scare during a creepy movie.
I nod. "Yep. I'll come in for a bit." She nods and leaves with a troubled expressing. Must be something Star said. I pick up my wand and hold it in front of me.
"You showed me the timelines." I say, quietly. "Why?"
Silence.
But then an almost teenage sounding, but clear and deep, voice replies. "To show you that you are a hero, Marco Diaz."
