"Veronica, thank you again for doing this." Jughead said, picking up his coat off the table, "We really appreciate it." Kevin nodded in agreement.
Veronica had offered to babysit Silas for a couple of hours so that Jughead and Kevin could go on a short date. It was the perfect arrangement, because Silas and Veronica could spend a little mother-son time (even if Silas was too young to realise it), and Jughead and Kevin could get some much needed alone time.
"Of course!" Veronica answered, "It's my pleasure." She smiled.
"We're just gonna go for a short walk in the park, and then we'll be back." Kevin told her.
"Have fun. And take as long as you want, don't feel like you have to come back quickly." Veronica returned.
"Alright, well, I'll just say bye to Si, and then we'll go." Jughead turned to Kevin. "Ready?" Kevin nodded, and followed Jughead over to Silas' crib, which was stationed in the middle of the living room.
They each leaned over the crib to give Silas a kiss on the forehead. Then, with one last thank you and goodbye to Veronica, they were out of the door.
The weather forecast had predicted a sixty-percent chance of rain that night, but Jughead and Kevin had decided to take a chance and go for a walk in the park anyway. So, with arms wrapped around each other's waists, they strolled down the path together. Not talking; just listening to the sounds of the city in the darkness. The clouds in the sky blocked any light from the stars or the moon, but the lights from the city brightened the night.
As they walked, they began to feel a light sprinkle of rain.
"Should we go back?" Kevin asked, turning to his husband. Jughead shrugged.
"I don't mind it. If it starts raining heavier, then yes." He answered. Not long after he'd said it, the sprinkle picked up, turning in to full on rain.
"Crap, my hair!" Kevin exclaimed, pulling Jughead's whoopee cap off of his head and placing it on his own. "Let's go back now." He grabbed Jughead's hand and started moving back in the direction they'd come. But Jughead stayed put. "Come on, Jug." Kevin pleaded, "What're you doing?" He asked in response to the smile that was creeping across Jughead's face.
"I just realised," Jughead explained, "That after all these years, we've never kissed in the rain."
"No, Jug." Kevin implored, "Let's go home, please. We're getting soaked."
Ignoring this, Jughead stepped forward and kissed Kevin deeply, wrapping his arms around his husband's neck. Realising there was no point fighting it, Kevin kissed Jughead back, putting his arms around Jughead's waist.
By the time they pulled apart, they were both completely drenched.
"I guess since we're already soaked, we might as well stay a bit," Kevin acknowledged, "Because I would kill to break out into song right now." Without hesitating, Jughead grabbed Kevin's arm, and began to sing.
I'm singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feeling I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds so dark above
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place
Come on with the rain, I've a smile on my face
I'll walk down the lane with a happy refrain
And singin' just singin' in the rainThey spun around together, hand in hand, as if they'd choreographed it beforehand. Kevin took over for the second verse.
Why am I smilin' and why do I sing?
Why does December seem sunny as Spring?
Why do I get up each morning to start happy
And get up with joy in my heart?
Why is each new task a trifle to do?
Because I am living a life full of you
Standing on benches on either side of the path, they finished the song, never breaking eye-contact.I'm singin' in the rain, just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feeling I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds so dark above
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place
Come on with the rain, I've a smile on my face
I'll walk down the lane with a happy refrain
And singin' just singin' in the rain
After they finished, they agreed they sounded awesome and headed back home. When they were walking back across the park, Kevin slipped on the wet grass. He grabbed Jughead in an attempt to steady himself, and they ended up falling into a muddy puddle together. They lay there for a moment, roaring with laughter.
When Jughead and Kevin arrived at their apartment, Jughead slid his key into the lock, and the two of them made their way inside. Veronica was sitting on the couch with Silas in her arms, and when she saw Jughead and Kevin standing before her, soaking wet and muddy, her eyes widened in surprise.
"What happened to you?" She asked, quietly, so as not to wake Silas.
"We got a little carried away." Kevin admitted. Veronica raised her eyebrows.
"We were the only ones in the park, so we decided to preform a musical number. Then Kevin slipped on the grass and we both landed in a muddle puddle." Jughead explained. Veronica giggled.
"Why don't you guys change, and maybe shower," She suggested, "I don't mind staying with Silas a little longer.
"You sure?" Jughead asked.
"Yeah!" Veronica assured him, "Go shower. I'll stay with Si in case he wakes up."
"Thanks, Ronnie." Kevin said, following Jughead down the hall to their bedroom.
A little while later, Jughead and Kevin joined Veronica on the couch. They put Silas in his crib, and just sat together, chatting and catching up.
