"G'morning!" Archie greeted, walking into the kitchen. Brea sat at the table, eating pancakes and looking surly while Kevin made coffee.
"Hi," Kevin replied, "Coffee's almost ready." Archie nodded, yawning, then gave Kevin a kiss on the cheek.
"Wait," Kevin whispered in his husband's ear, "Brea's being a pain this morning. Let's get her back by kissing in front of her."
Archie rolled his eyes, shaking his head. "No, Kev-"
But Kevin cut him off, grabbing him around the waist and pressing a deep kiss onto Archie's lips. Brea looked up from her pancakes and cried, "Ugh, guys! Not in the kitchen! I'm trying to eat here!"
Archie pulled away, laughing at the disgusted look on Brea's face.
"This is NOT how I wanted to start my morning." She muttered.
"Brea, where's your brother?" Kevin asked.
"How should I know?" Brea snapped. "I'm not in charge of him."
"Watch the attitude, missy," Archie reprimanded, "Kevin, can you go get Blaze outta bed?" Kevin sighed, braced himself for the battle, and headed down the hall. Archie sat down at the across from his daughter.
"Okay, B, spill."
"What?" Brea asked.
"There's gotta be a reason you're in such a bad mood today." Archie elaborated.
"What, am I not allowed to just have feelings now?" Brea shot back.
"Yes, Brea, you are allowed to have feelings. And I know you get grouchy in the morning. But I know you, and right now you're wearing your 'something's going on' face. So spill."
Brea stared down at her pancakes, not talking. After a minute, she finally stated, "Fine. Mitch and I had a fight last night." Mitch was Brea's boyfriend.
"Did you break up?" Archie asked carefully.
"No, Papa! Obviously, if we broke up I would say 'we broke up', not 'we had a fight'."
"Okay, okay." Archie held up his hands in surrender. They sat in silence, then Archie said, "I'm sorry, sweetie. I'm sure it'll work out." Brea shrugged, and jerked her hand away from Archie when he tried to comfort her. Just then they heard raised voices coming from down the hall.
"Blaze Reese Andrews-Keller, for the fifth time, get out of bed! And do something with your hair!"
"My hair is fine!"
"No, it's not. Brush it, at least."
"Just because you use a full can of hairspray everyday doesn't mean everyone else needs to!"
"Oh boy." Archie sighed. "I'd better go back there. Finish eating, you have to leave soon."
Finally, Blaze and Brea left for school, after Kevin forced a comb through Blaze's hair.
"So, what were you and Brea talking about?" Kevin asked, sitting down on the couch with his coffee. Archie sat down beside him.
"Apparently she and Mitch had a fight last night."
Kevin frowned. "Did they break up?"
Archie shook his head. "No, just a little squabble."
"I kinda hope they do break up." Kevin admitted.
"Don't say that!" Archie chided.
"What? I don't like him!" Kevin protested.
"Why not? He's sweet, and he gets good grades."
"I know, I just don't like the fact that my daughter has a boyfriend."
"Kevin, she's seventeen. She can take care of herself."
"You're right."
"I always am."
Later in the afternoon, Blaze and Brea came home from school. Brea's eyes and cheeks were red and her face was puffy. Archie could tell she had been crying.
"Sweetie, what's wrong?" He asked.
"Nothing. I'm fine. I'm going to my room now so DON'T follow me." She hurried down the hall and slammed the door behind her. Kevin was at the grocery store, and Archie hoped he'd be home soon.
"How was your day, Blaze?" He asked. Blaze shrugged.
"Fine. I'm hungry, is there food I can eat?"
Archie nodded. "There's leftovers from dinner. Your dad will be home soon with more groceries, though, if you wanna wait." Blaze shrugged and went into the kitchen. Archie went back to Brea's room.
He tapped on the door with his knuckles, but got no response, so he pushed the door open.
"What do you want?" Brea huffed.
"Did you and Mitch break up today?" Archie asked gently. Brea didn't answer for a moment, but let Archie sit beside her on the bed. Finally, she answered, "Yes."
"Sweetie, I'm so sorry." Archie murmured. "What happened?"
"Apparently he's been sexting some guy for about a week. I just found out today, so I dumped him." Archie gulped.
"That's too bad," He said, "I, uh, I'm sure you did the right thing, dumping him."
Brea nodded, and said, "I'm just glad I caught it and broke us off before he actually cheated on me."
"Are you okay though?"
"Yeah." She replied, "I think I'm gonna call my mom. Can you go now?" Archie smiled and left the room.
When he returned to the kitchen, he found Kevin there, stacking cans in the pantry.
"Hi."
"Hey."
"How's Brea?" Kevin asked, "Did she and Mitch make up?"
Archie shook his head. "Actually, they broke up."
"Really? What happened?"
"I guess he's been sexting with someone else."
Kevin said, "Is she okay?"
"Yeah. She's on the phone with Betty right now."
"Good. Hey, you don't happen to know Mitchell's address do you? I might also borrow my dad's gun."
"Believe me, I wanna kill him as much as you do, but I think we need to stay out of this and let Brea handle this on her own." Archie decided.
"Yeah, I guess so." Kevin agreed.
"Say it." Archie prodded.
"Say what?"
"That I'm right. I'm always right."
"Fine. You're always right."
Archie smiled and kissed Kevin's cheek.
"You know it."
