"Betty!" Jughead called from where he was sitting on their bed. "Are you coming or not?"
"Yes, as soon as I finish this paper. I have to get this done tonight if I want to pass this class." Betty called back. Jughead got out of bed and walked down the hall to where Betty was sitting at the kitchen table typing on her laptop. He slid his arms around his wife's shoulders from behind.
"G'night. Love you." He gave Betty a kiss on the cheek. Betty looked up and replied,
"Love you too. I'll come in as soon as I finish this okay?" She gave Jughead a quick kiss. "G'night."
A few hours later, Jughead awoke to find that Betty still hadn't gotten into bed yet. Rubbing his eyes and yawning, he went out into the kitchen. There he saw Betty sound asleep with her head on the table and her fingers still hovering over the mouse pad.
Jughead couldn't help but smile at how adorable his wife looked. He added a period to the end of Betty's concluding paragraph, and hit save before closing the laptop.
"Betts." He whispered, shaking Betty's shoulder gently, then again with a little more force. "Betty, come get into bed." But Betty stayed asleep, so Jughead realised he would have to carry her. He knew he couldn't just leave her sleeping at the table.
So, trying to be as gentle as possible, Jughead slid one arm under the crook of Betty's knees, and the other under her shoulders. Slowly he rose to a standing position. He walked down the hall slowly, so as not to wake Betty or hurt his own back.
Placing Betty down on the bed he stripped off her shoes and crawled in beside her, pulling the covers over both of them. Betty mumbled something about due dates, and rolled over in her sleep. Jughead wrapped an arm around her, and was soon fast asleep as well.
The next afternoon, Betty arrived home from school to find Jughead sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by what appeared to be Santa's workshop. The walls were lined with twinkling lights, branches of pine, red ribbons, tinsel, and mistletoe. In the corner behind the couch was a large tree completely decked out with lights and covered in ornaments.
"Juggie," Betty said slowly and carefully, "What is this?"
"Well, I decided that since it's December now, and I got home before you, I would decorate for Christmas and surprise you!" He looked at Betty's less than ecstatic face. "You don't like it?" He asked, pouting slightly.
"Normally, I'd be mad that you decorated the apartment without consulting me," Betty replied, "But honestly, right now I'm so exhausted that it's hardly even bothering me."
"Why are you so exhausted?" Jughead asked, moving toward Betty with a look of concern on his face. He wrapped his arms around her as Betty replied,
"Just...writing essays, and studying for finals. I mean, last night was a prime example. I've never fallen asleep while working before!"
"I'm sorry, honey. Is there anything I can do?"
"Not at the moment, no. But thanks, you're the best."
Jughead drew back from the hug and pointed toward the ceiling. "Mistletoe." He commented casually, as if he'd had no idea it was there, "You know what that means..."
Betty gave her husband an amused smile and leaned forward for a kiss.
Not too much later, when Betty was just leaving the bathroom, she found her way was blocked by Jughead, who pointed to the top of the door frame and announced, "Mistletoe!"
"Oh my god, Juggie!" Betty exclaimed, amused and exasperated, "This is the fifth time in the past hour. Where did you get all this mistletoe?"
"That's not important. What's important is that we respect the time honoured tradition of always kissing when we're beneath mistletoe."
Betty sighed, rolling her eyes and chuckling, but nonetheless she put her arms around Jughead, pressing their lips firmly together.
