Dove didn't wait for a reply. Instead, she slammed her laptop shut and tossed it onto the beanbag chair that was thrown messily in the corner of her room. She glared at it for the longest time before she closed her eyes tightly and clenched her fists. The date was going to mess with her head, but what kind of person would she be if she quit now? She grabbed her purse and went to the bathroom to reapply the mascara that she never wore. Long story short, she felt fake. She was wearing clothes she wouldn't normally wear and instead of sneakers, she was wearing black flats with a nice dress rather than a baggy sweater. She felt like she was playing a role in a movie that was based off someone entirely. She felt empty.
And when she heard a knock at her front door, she felt her heart plummet into her gut. Immediately she felt like a ton of brinks were on her shoulders, but still, she walked toward the door. Her mother had her phone out and was ready to take a picture of the couple, but Dove didn't want a memory of this. She didn't care about it anymore. The only person on her mind was Max. And damn him for screwing it all up for the both of them. If it wasn't for him, they could have been together. But that wasn't how Dove's story was going to end. Not anymore.
When she twisted the door knob, she opened it with the slightest hesitation. On the outside, she put on a smile. On the inside, she was locked away in a chamber, surrounded by anger and sadness. She sucked it all in and let her fake happiness show, morphing into a slight annoyance but still, she managed to look at the boy in front of her with a smile.
In his hands was a handful of roses, wrapped in a clear green sheet of plastic to hold them all together. On his face was his normal charming smile, which seemed the slightest bit daring for the night. His eyes pierced Dove's and she felt intimidated and small. And whether that was because of her state or a sudden bad feeling about him, she didn't care. For every bad feeling was sucked inside, pushing only the forced happiness to show through her eyes and smile. And she couldn't help but feel she was a walking time bomb, hiding like a robot.
He gently reached the roses toward her so that she could accept them. With her mind slower than usual, it took her a second to register what was going on. When she accepted them, his smile relaxed just slightly, but there was still a hint of danger deep within his eyes, and Dove didn't know why. With a little squeal from her mother in the living room, Dove turned her attention toward her and back toward the boy who looked slightly curious. Dove motioned her hand to come in and stepped to the side of the door way so that he could enter. With two easy footsteps, the boy was standing on the front mat with his arms hanging down from his sides. Dove eyed him, as if he were some criminal entering her private sanctuary. But nevertheless, she smiled and pretended to play nice.
"This is my mother," Dove said with an overly cheery voice. She hoped he wouldn't catch onto it and take it more as excitement than anything else. And sure, she was desperately wanting to go out into the world, but at the same time, she wanted to hide, and that outweighed the good.
"Oh, it's very nice to meet you," he spoke softly, with the huskiness of his voice trailing along. Swiftly, he took another step toward my mother and shook her hand gently.
And Dove's mother only smiled. It was then that Dove knew that her mother liked the boy. Dove wanted to scream and claw at the boy, telling him that he didn't mean anything to her right then and there. But she couldn't, and though it was tempting, she wouldn't. She tucked that feeling away in the cage inside of her and plastered on her charming smile.
"Oh, you two are too cute! Let me take a picture!" Dove's mother readied the camera, and with a swift and easy movement, Dove felt an arm wrap around her waist and a pair of soft lips hit against her right cheek bone. She wanted to push away, but instead she sucked the bad feeling away and forced herself to enjoy it.
Because no one else loves you.
And then, as if to snap her from her negativity, something latched into her hand and she was pulled gently out into the real world on the other side of her santuary.
