Liam liked dubstep. I created the best vibrations in his ears. Essie said sometimes my music is so loud some people tell me as they walk by to turn it down or I'll go deaf. ha.
He wondered what Essie would think if he told her he didn't want to go to camp half-blood. They did everything together, told each other everything.
When he started talking a year ago she made him promise that now I could talk I needed to tell her everything. He hasn't broke that promise.
As he walked he thought about it. It wasn't that he didn't want to go, it would be lots of fun, but he wasn't built for battle. He didn't have ADHD like his sister giving her fast reflexes, dyslexia helping him read Greek. He was just deaf, which would probably betray you in a battle rather than help.
Think about something else. He scolded himself. He looked over to see Zoe studying at a café table. She wasn't smart like her brother, she got her dad's side. She loved the water and always smelled like the sea. She was so pretty. Like she would like you idiot.
She looked up and noticed that he was looking at her. She smiled and waved him over.
"Trouble with school?" Liam asked. Even after being able to talk for a year, talking felt weird, a strange buzz in his ears.
"Yes." She signed and said probably. "help?"
"Sure." Liam said sliding closer so her could read the book. She smelled like the beach.
"So that's how you find slope." Zoe said after 20 minutes of explaining.
"Yes. weren't you paying attention in class?"
"No? when do I ever?" She asked. Liam nodded. "Is something wrong?"
"Well, my parents told me I'm a demigod."
"Makes sense." Zoe said.
"How?"
"Well for one your mom looks like a goddess when she wears a toga, two my mom told me."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Liam asked.
"It wasn't my thing to tell apparently. I would of though." Zoe said. Liam nodded and played with a headphone. "What are you going to do?"
"I don't know. Camp Half-Blood would be fun but..."
"Not sure they would want a deaf guy?"
"Yea...thanks for sugar coating it." Liam said, hopefully sarcastically.
"No problem. I don't think you should go." She said, rushing the last part.
"Why?" Liam's said, why would it matter to her. Her face turned red.
"Uh...I-I..." She struggled to sign. She took his hand and said something really quickly, squeezing her eyes shut. He looked at her, he guessed he looked sad because she looked sorry. "Sorry sometimes you're so normal I forget you're deaf."
"Thanks, I guess. What did you say?" Liam asked, she looked embarrassed again.
"Do I have to repeat?" Zoe asked. Liam nodded. she shoved her stuff in her bag. "Follow me."
Liam didn't protest he got and followed her. Playing with the string of his blue sweatshirt. Looking down at his dark blue converse. He usually didn't have nervous energy but he kept shoving his hands in his kaki shorts pockets, playing with the strings hanging off his pockets of the sweatshirt she stop when he came to a small notch in a alley wall, big enough for the both of them to fit in.
"We could of gone to my house." Liam offered. She was so close. She shook her head. "Why."
She but her lip. "I don't know if I can say it again, so I'll show you." She said. He didn't understand what a small alley way had to do with it,
he understood when his lips connected with Zoe's.
At first he was too surprised to kiss back she pulled away disappointed. "I knew it." She said and started to walk away. Uh idiot wake up, girl of your dreams walking away! Liam grabbed her wrist and pulled her back into the small notch. This time he kissed back.
She pulled away her eyes wide. "I was so surprised I didn't know what to do." He explained. "I couldn't believe a beautiful girl like you liked a deaf guy like me."
She smiled and moved a strand if hair from his face, "I love everything about you, Liam Valdez, everything." She signed, to busy smiling to speak behind it.
"Hey there's that dance on Saturday..." Liam asked jokingly. Zoe kissed him again.
"I've been waiting for you to ask, stupid." She smiled. "Happy birthday."
Liam pulled her into another long kiss.
