"How could you do that ?!", I yelled at Thomas the next day, slapping him in the face.
My eyes were red and puffy from the lack of sleep and all the crying from the last night. Thomas caught my hand in my attempt to slap him again and grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to look him in the eye.
"How could you be so stupid?!", he yelled back at me. "From all these Shanks, you think I did it?!"
"You were the only one who knew!"
I pushed him back, giving him a deadly glare. "Just stay away from me!"
"Y/N it wasn't me, I swear!", he said. "Someone out there is watching you, reporting everything to Alby! Why would I say something now?!"
"I don't know and I don't care!"
The whole Glade was looking at us in that moment, so I turned on my heels and went towards the Doors, getting ready for my daily run. I had tears in my eyes and I barely contained myself not to burst out crying. I peeked at the Slammer, but everything was dark in there, not a single sign of Newt.
As I entered the huge Maze, I realized that I wouldn't be able to run my whole Section. I didn't sleep and I barely ate in the morning.
I couldn't make it even to the center of the Section when I felt the need to just stop and gain my breath. I found a corner and sat down, trying to eat at least an apple. But it was like my throat has tightened over night, so the fruit only scratched my neck. I gave up soon and I cried for a good twenty minutes, before finally being able to stand up again.
I needed to go back to the Glade before losing my consciousness in there. There was enough time for another Runner to go into the Maze and come back before the Doors would close. So I dragged my body back towards the Glade, using the huge walls for a better support. My eyes were heavy and my feet were tired from the effort. Only the thought of Newt helped me to put a foot in front of the other. I knew that if I would collapse there, no one would come to look after me. They would probably think that I was just spending some more time mapping and by the time they would realize I wasn't coming back, it would be too late for someone to go into the Maze.
As I entered the Glade I just lost it. I fell to the ground breathing heavily. The first one who was in a second near me was Gally, helping me to get up.
"Hey, just breathe!", he said. "Are you okay?"
I nodded, not being able to say anything else. He put my arm around his neck and helped me to walk towards the Medjacks' hut. As he saw us, Clint came out and helped Gally to get me inside. They lay me down on a table, trying to find out if I've been injured. When they didn't find any wound on my body, they both gave me a puzzled look.
"What happened there?", Clint asked me, folding his arms.
"I don't know, I don't feel very good." I covered my eyes with my hands, trying to hide my teary eyes. But then Clint's voice softened.
"Look, Newt is going to be okay", he said. "Alby agreed on one meal a day and how much water he needs. So you don't have anything to worry about. Of course, he's gonna starve for a bit, but better that than the Banishment."
I widened my eyes in shook. "Banishment?"
Gally took a deep breath before starting to talk. "Some Gladers suggested that he should be Banished for breaking Alby's rule. Of course he didn't agree on that. But Newt might not be the Second in Command for long though."
I suddenly felt like throwing up. And everything was so perfect just a couple of days ago! Tears started running down my checks and I bit my bottom lip to hold my screams.
"Oh God..." was all that I could murmur.
I locked eyes with Gally then, begging him to take me into my room. He nodded and grabbed my arm again, while his other hand was on my waist in a tight grip.
"Everything is going to be alright, you'll see", he tried to comfort me, but I shook my head in mistrust. I only hoped that Newt would be strong enough to pass the week.
As I got inside my room, I thanked Gally for his help and proceed to close the door. But he stopped it with his hand, making me jump a little from his sudden move.
"Do you need anything else?", he asked.
"No, I'm fine." I sighed and run a hand through my hair.
Gally nodded then slightly smiled. "Take a nap. You'll see everything clearer tomorrow."
"I will. Please tell Alby to send another Runner for my Section today."
"Not a problem", he winked at me then closed the door when he finally left.
Being alone again, the dark thoughts came back along with Clint's and Gally's latest news. All I wanted in that moment was to sleep and forget about everything even if just for a couple of minutes. But when I turned around and headed toward my bed, there was a small purple flower on my pillow. I frowned in confusion, not knowing from whom it was. My thought went to Thomas, maybe trying to apologize for telling Alby about me and Newt. But that was a thought for another day.
