"Ravenkit."
The small, black furred kit rolled over and ignored his name.
"Ravenkit. Get up."
"What?" Ravenkit mumbled.
"It's our apprentice ceremony!" Lynxkit meowed. Ravenkit was on his paws immediately, washing himself. Lynxkit giggled while watching him. Frostkit came into the den and sat next to her sister.
"Leafpelt says she wants me as a medicine cat apprentice," Frostkit announced.
Ravenkit looked up from his fur. "You'd be perfect!" he mewed. "You're serious, smart, and follow the warrior code."
"Thanks, but I'm nervous. If I say yes, what will happen? What if I'm the only one around to treat wounds and I forget which herb helps it heal?" Frostkit meowed, pacing back and forth. She was probably the most mature of the three kits, and also took things more seriously than the others.
"Leafpelt can teach you well," a voice said from behind them. Mistyleaf was coming into the den, ready to groom their fur. "She will understand if you make a mistake, and help you fix it. Don't be nervous."
Frostkit purred after pondering her mother's words. Mistyleaf purred back and licked Frostkit's almost already groomed fur until every hair was flat on her back.
Lynxkit was jumping around, excited to finally become an apprentice.
Thunderclaw padded in, sitting beside Mistyleaf. "Lynxkit, you're as excited as your mother was on the day of her ceremony."
Mistyleaf nudged Thunderclaw playfully and put down Frostkit. Lynxkit's fur was always straight; so there was no need to wash her.
"May all cats who can climb a birch tree gather under the Highbranch," they heard Sunstar call.
The kits took their places next to the trunk of the tree, while Mistyleaf darted up in a flash. Sunstar licked her ear, and Mistyleaf returned it. Then Sunstar called out, "We have three kits who are now six moons old and are ready to start training as apprentices. Ravenkit, Lynxkit, and Frostkit, please come up."
The kits climbed up the tree, not too fast since they hadn't climbed before. Mistyleaf helped each of them up at the top. Sunstar greeted them, then went on with the ceremony. "Ravenkit, please step up." Ravenkit did as told, and Sunstar continued, "Do you promise to put Clan needs before your own at all times?"
"I do," Ravenkit mewed.
"Do you promise to put the Clan before yourself in any and all circumstances?"
"I do."
Sunstar purred, "Then by the power of Starclan, I name you Ravenpaw! Your mentor shall be Fangheart!" Sunstar turned to Fangheart. The white warrior looked shocked. "Fangheart, you have trained hard and take a deep understanding in the warrior code. I hope you will pass that on to Ravenpaw." Fangheart nodded and waited at the bottom of the tree. When Ravenpaw came down, he touched noses with his new apprentice.
"Lynxkit, please step up." The ceremony repeated itself until the end. "I name you Lynxpaw! Your mentor shall be Roseheart!" Roseheart stood proudly and tall, knowing it was Mistyleaf's decision to give Lynxpaw to her.
"Roseheart, you fought hard in the battle with DeathClan and captured Clawstar. You helped save Mistyleaf and Thunderclaw from the gorge, and you are ready for your first apprentice. I hope you pass on everything you know to Lynxpaw," Sunstar announced. Roseheart touched noses with Lynxpaw as she got to the bottom of the tree.
"Frostkit," Sunstar purred. "Leafpelt has requested for you to be a medicine cat apprentice. It is your choice whether or not to accept this offer. Leafpelt will not only train you in herbs but you will learn battle moves as well."
Frostkit crossed her paws. "I-I...I accept."
"Do you promise to listen closely to the warrior code and maintain contact with Starclan?" Sunstar asked.
"I do," Frostkit mewed nervously.
"Do you promise to heal the greatest wounds before the smaller ones?"
"I do."
"Then by the power of Starclan, I name you Frostpaw! Leafpelt shall mentor you in the ways of the medicine cat," Sunstar announced. He turned to Leafpelt. "I hope you will teach her well, and maybe she will turn out to be nearly as good a medicine cat as you." Leafpelt purred as he complimented her.
Frostpaw climbed down the tree and shakily touched noses with Leafpelt. Leafpelt licked the apprentice's ear, whispering, "Don't worry. It'll be okay."
Frostpaw purred. She padded over to her siblings, listening proudly to the chants of her new name by the Clan cats.
"Congratulations, sis!" Ravenpaw meowed when she came over. "Good luck as a medicine cat apprentice!"
Frostpaw smiled nervously. "Thanks, good luck as a normal apprentice..."
As cats crowded them to congratulate them, Frostpaw wondered, Can I really do this?
