Ravenkit sat in his den, the only kit awake. He was nearing the day of his apprenticeship, and was too excited to rest.

Suddenly, Ravenkit heard a rustling in the bushes by his den. His muscles tensed, wondering if it was an intruder. Ravenkit unsheathed his short claws and let out a high pitched growl. But he was greeted instead by a cat he couldn't mistake.

"I see you're still awake, you little furball," Mistyleaf purred in a teasing way. She picked Ravenkit up by the scruff and carried him to the opening of the nursery. Ravenkit looked around at the night sky, the stars of Silverpelt gleaming down.

"We all go there if we're good," Mistyleaf meowed, looking at one star in particular, "and we can meet our warrior ancestors." Ravenkit looked into his mother's black eyes and saw the stars reflected in them. Even the crescent moon shone in her eyes.

"Mommy," Ravenkit mewed, "is something wrong?" He knew how Mistyleaf got lost in thought whenever she was upset about something.

Mistyleaf looked at him. She sighed, knowing it was time to tell him. "My love is up there."

Ravenkit looked confused. "But Thunderclaw's down here."

Mistyleaf licked Ravenkit's ear. "It's hard to explain. Thunderclaw is my mate, but I loved another cat at the time," she started. "His name was Ravenclaw. We'd been close as apprentices, and Ravenclaw revealed he loved me the same day Thunderclaw did. I was torn between the two, and the only thing that solved it was when Ravenclaw was killed. He gave his life for me, saving me from a Twoleg's bullet. That's why I named you Ravenkit."

Ravenkit, still a young kit, seemed to take it the wrong way. "I'm going to get shot?!" he mewed frantically.

Mistyleaf laughed. "No. I'd never let that happen to you. Ravenclaw got shot. You were named in memory of him."

Ravenkit nodded, "Oh."

Mistyleaf sat with him for a bit longer, then carried Ravenkit back into the den. "Time to sleep," she mewed, licking the kit twice before leaving. Ravenkit watched her leave, and settled into his nest.

"You."

Ravenkit jumped at the voice. A starry pelted cat padded up to him, white paws barely touching the cloudy ground.

"You," the cat mewoed again. "Is it truly you? The raven's wing that shelters the frosty lynx?"

Ravenkit stared in confusion. "What do you mean?" he asked, but the cat merely shook her head and disappeared.
