I grabbed the mail and walked over to the elevator, punching in the number 12.
I sighed and leaned against the wall, looking through my mail. Bills. Bills. Bills. College application. Letter from the veterinarian.
I needed more hours at the market to pay off these bills.
Finally, the elevator stopped at my floor. Getting out, I walked down the narrow hallway to my apartment. As I put the key into the door, I heard Chance yip on the other side. When I finally got the door open, Chance, my eighty pound German Shepard, jumped up at me, nearly knocking me over.
"Hey, buddy." I smiled, scratching behind his ears. "Wanna go for a walk?"
Chance yipped again, his tail wagging a mile per minute. I put my things down on the counter and grabbed Chance's leash.
"Let's go, Chancey." I said, hooking the leash to his collar.
I walked him over to the elevator and hit the button to go to the main floor.
As I got out, I saw it was already getting dark outside.
"Hey, Maisie, it's getting dark out. You goin' out at this time all alone?" Richard, the guy who works the front desk, asked me.
Richard was the closest thing to a friend that I had. We hung out in the lobby sometimes and got coffees, but he had a family. He was seven years older than me and was married and had a one-year-old son.
I was already nineteen and had no future whatsoever. Chance was my only family.
My dad ran off before I was born and my mother died in a car accident when I was little. Don't get me wrong, my foster parents and roommates weren't terrible. I just left them behind me when I turned eighteen. I saved up all of my money from allowance and my part-time job and as soon as I was old enough, I moved out.
Then one night a stray dog came up to me while I was on a walk and I named him Chance.
"Yeah. Chance has been stuck in the apartment all day long. I should be back in about twenty minutes." I replied.
"Be careful, eh? You got your phone with you just in case, right?" Richard asked me.
"Yea, mom." I replied, rolling my eyes. "Besides, Chance will keep me safe."
"Alright, Mais. Be careful, ya hear?"
I nodded and opened the door to leave the building. There was a strong breeze outside. I pulled Chance along towards the woods behind the apartment building.
I began whistling as I walked along through the woods, deeper in. The sounds of the insects calmed me.
I was lost in my own little world when Chance's leash slipped from my hands. I looked to see him barking and running off deep into the woods, farther than I was used to going.
"Chance!" I called, running after him.
I ran towards where I could hear him barking. I also heard growling, but I slowed down when I heard other animals joining in on the growling.
"Chance?" I called out in a shaky voice.
I heard a high-pitched cry from Chance as he came running at me, his tail between his legs. I kneeled down beside him and noticed his ear was torn.
"What was that?" I asked aloud.
I heard a low growl and I froze. Turning slowly around I came face to face to a creature with big brown eyes.
And I screamed.
