I woke up with a jump, expecting to still be in the safe room. I remembered falling asleep in there.

I was restricted by a strong grip around my waist. I carefully rolled over to come face to face with Tom.

His face was scratched up and his left cheek bone was bruised badly. It made me want to cry. I should have stayed. I was a vampire. I could have used weapons or even strength on them.

Even scratched up, his face was flawless. He had really long eyelashes I had never noticed.

"Morning." His eyes fluttered open and met mine. Those beautiful deep brown eyes...

"I didn't know if you were in danger yesterday." I confessed, blushing and looking down.

"I wasn't. My brother wanted to have a talk with me about you." He said in an angered tone, holding me tighter. Butterflies fluttered around in my stomach at our closeness.

"About what?" I asked, holding my breath as he trailed his fingers up and down slowly my arm.

"Us. He asked when we were to be married, if we had mated yet, how much you mean to me... I didn't answer any of his questions obviously." He explained to me.

"Why did he need to know that stuff?" I asked.

"I don't know. Probably planning to sabotage our wedding." Tom sighed.

Even though I didn't want to marry him, I couldn't help but feel bad. All his life Tom awaited the perfect soulmate to spend eternity with but he got stuck with me. And now his brother is on a mission to kill me.

"Does he have a mate?"

"No. She... she uh, died." Tom said, looking away.

"Oh. I'm so sorry to hear that..."

"Don't worry about it, love. I won't let him get near you ever again or hurt you nontheless. See, that necklace I gave you. It is enchanted to protect you. There is magic in it that gives you your own shield. It is not really full-proof, but it is good protection."

"A necklace that shields me? Never heard of that back on earth." I chuckled. He frowned.

"It isn't a joke, Maisie. That necklace means a lot to my family."

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to insult you..." I trailed off, holding the pendant in my hand.

"It's okay, darling. Now, we must talk about something I have been trying to hold off." His tone hardened.

"What is it?"

"I want to mate with you... when you're ready to. I won't rush you. But I know I am ready for you. Maisie, I love you. You are my mate and I want to spend my life with you." Tom told me, making me catch my breath. I looked up into his perfect brown eyes.

"I... I want to. I really do. I just... can't. Not yet at least. I'm sorry, Tom." I apologized.

"I understand. You need your time."

"It isn't the time. It's just..."

"What is it?"

"I just... I..."

"Hey, it's okay. You don't need to tell me now." Tom soothed, rubbing my back gently. I nodded. "Now lets go her some breakfast. I'm starving."

"When aren't you starving, Tom?" I laughed. He pouted at me.

"Hey, Mais. You looked great at the ball the other day." Chris complimented as I arrived at my training. Tom was off to do something so it was just Chris and I.

"Aw, thanks. I didn't even see you." I said sheepishly.

"I wouldn't expect you to. The entire empire was there, all to celebrate you." Chris told me. I smiled.

"So what are we working on today?" I asked.

"Shooting at moving targets." Chris told me while I groaned loudly. Today was going to be a very long day.
