Last To Know (The Wanted)

Chapter Eight

{{A/N: get ready for a plot twist;)}}

It was late into the night when the sirens went off. I tried to ignore them and go back to sleep but Tom shook me awake.

"Maisie, get up. That siren. It means there's intruders." Tom told me. I got up cautiously. Tom went over to his drawer and opened it, pulling out a long sword and a metal baseball bat. Handing the bat to me, he crept over to the door.

"What's happening?" I asked in a shaky voice.

"Someone is in the palace. Don't worry, though. I will keep you safe no matter what. I promise. There is no need for you to worry, Maisie. Come here," he told me. I went over to him and he surprised me by hugging me. I didn't care, though. I hugged him back. I was terrified.

"Whose intruding?" I asked.

"I don't know yet. Just stay right next to me and do exactly as I say. It isn't safe for us to stay here. We must get to a safe room. There are three underneath the palace." He said, carefully creaking the door ajar. "This hallway is clear but we must be cautious."

I stepped out behind Tom. The hallways were eerie and dark, and the sirens didn't make the situation any easier.

Tom made sure I was right behind him as we went down the hallway. He motioned for me to follow him to the left. Looking down the stairs, we could see Siva, Max, two girls, and a bunch of guards fighting against what looked like ninjas.

"Stay here. I have to help them." Tom told me. I nodded once as he crept down the stairs. I huddled in the corner, clutching the metal bat as my life depended on it.

My heart was beating so hard against my chest I was sure Tom heard it.

I watched him join the fight, killing two of the ninja guys instantly. I flinched watching him do this. I knew he was protecting me and Siva and Max and those two girls.

I was so focused on watching Tom and making sure he didn't get hurt that I didn't hear anyone sneak up behind me.

I screamed as loud as I could as a guy yanked me up by my hair, pushing me down the stairs.

I lost my footing and rolled down the last ten steps. I heard my ankle crack and I whimpered as I landed at the bottom.

"Maisie!" Tom yelled. In his moment of weakness, one of the ninja guys attacked him.

I was yanked up by my hair again. Geez, can't he just pick me up by my arm or something?

"Let her go!" Tom yelled, taking a step towards me.

I held my breath as the guy holding me brought a knife to my throat.

"Don't hurt her." Tom said menacingly.

"Or what?" He asked. I felt the cold blade touch my skin before slight pressure was put on it. I gasped as it broke the surface of my skin. I smelt blood. Tom stiffened, and I knew it was because of the smell.

"It's finally been done. Thomas, the heir, has a mate. And you haven't even changed her yet. All the more reason we should kidnap her for our own empire." The ninja said.

"Get out of here." Tom spat. "She's my mate."

"You haven't marked her. Therefore she is not even yours. I bet you haven't even kissed or shared a bed yet." The blade pressed deeper. I was regretting not kissing Tom when I had the chance to.

"I..." he had no comeback. He looked hurt. I felt responsible. He told me he had longed for a mate for a long time. What a disappointment I was.

He wanted me to mate with him. He wanted to turn me. To kiss me. To marry me. But I couldn't. Now these guys were blaming him for it. I felt awful. Physically, as well.

"What are you willing to give for her?" The ninja asked Tom, finally taking the knife from my neck. My relief was quickly washed away when his knife slashed my upper arm. I tried to hold in my cries of pain. "What'll it be, Thomas? We want money. One hundred million. Or the girl shall be ours." His hands traveled across my body. I squirmed as his hands traveled down I my thighs. I couldn't stop my scream as he dug the knife into my leg.

"Stop it! I'll give you anything. What do you want?" Tom asked urgently.

"We don't have that kind of money," Siva whispered. The two girls were behind Max. He was protecting them.

"Pity." The guy said, digging the knife into my side. I gasped in pain as he dropped me to the floor as excruciating pain washed over me. "Let's go. This was a waste of time. Expect us to be back."

Black spots dotted my vision.

"Maisie... no, no, I just found you. I can't lose you... please, Siva help!" Tom cried, pulling me into his lap. I felt my clothes sticky from the blood. I felt lightheaded and my hearing was becoming tuned out. "No, stay awake! Maisie, please..."

"You have to turn her. She's losing blood too quickly. If you don't turn her within the next... five minutes she will die of blood loss." Siva said sternly.

"Thomas! Siva! Max! What happened?" Other people began arriving. I couldn't do it.

No matter how hard I tried I couldn't keep my eyes open. All I knew was pain. Pain in my neck, my arm, my leg, my ankle, my side. Everything.

"Maisie, please... I can't lose you. You are everything to me. Please! What do I do, Kassimuss? I'll do anything!" Tom begged.

"The only way is for you to turn her." Kassimuss told him. I managed to open my eyes. Red blotches and streaks ran across my vision. I saw Tom looking down at me, tears falling from his big brown eyes.

"Maisie... I can't lose you. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me." He said. "I love you."

Those were the last words I heard before everything went black.
