Walking out of school and anticipating Aiden's reaction was one of the most suspenseful things my mind has had to go through.
Maybe this time because I was sure he'd figure out who did it. And I did.
Just as I'd thought, when I walked out of the parking lot, Avril by my side, a huge crowd was gathered around Aiden's car. Scanning through the kids carefully, I realized that Aiden wasn't there yet and let out a small sigh of relief.
Half of me wanted to bust out of here like Pac man was after me and the other half wanted desperately to see Aiden's reaction.
The other half won.
'Come on, you turtle! I wanna see your handiwork,' Avril exclaimed, tugging me forward.
I let her drag me to the huge gathering of gawking kids, hands tightening around my bag straps. 'Okay, before you react, remember Ryan helped. A lot.'
She ignored me, pushing through kids roughly until she could see the car. Then she let out a huge dramatic gasp. 'Overdramatic much?' I mumbled under my breath as she turned to stare at me with wide eyes.
'Faye,' she leaned forward, her voice serious, whispering; before she burst into a huge grin, 'that right there? Best prank I've ever seen.'
I blinked at her, 'Better than ours?'
She winked, 'Ours was nothing compared to this. You and Ryan? Boy, I'd be afraid of you guys if I wasn't on your side.'
I bust out grinning,'We have sides?' She answered me with a look.
That's when the muttering and gasps around us increased and a path cleared all the way to the schools doors.
I felt sick.
Aiden walked out with his hand in Alexis's, both looking around at everyone like they'd gone mad.
That was, until they reached Aiden's car.
Alexis gasped louder than Avril had, perfectly manicured hand going to her mouth. I saw her smiling behind it.
Aiden stood frozen for a moment, eyes trained on his car; dumbstruck at what it looked like. Then his jaw set and his eyes narrowed, becoming hard in sudden anger.
He scanned the crowd like I had and stopped when his eyes came to rest on me. I kept my expression neutral, even as Avril squeezed my hand that she was holding to give me reassurance.
Aiden tore his hand out of Alexis's and marched towards me; I gulped. Behind him, Alexis had finally figured out it must have been me and was glaring; no longer finding the prank funny.
Aiden came to a stop feet from me and I gazed up at him with a bored expression, before calmly expecting my nails. 'Looks like someone finally gave you what you deserve, Hill. Nice car, by the way.'
Beside me, Avril camouflaged a laugh behind a cough and Aiden's hands curled into fists. 'Drop the act, Faye,' He hissed, taking another step forward; I held my ground, 'I know this was you. What the Fuck is wrong with you?'
And then right at that moment, a smokey, peppermint scent enveloped me and an arm was draped across my shoulder; and just like that, I was no longer scared.
