There were three ways I could describe her at the moment.

Wild.

Lost.

Beautiful.

There are different kinds of beautiful. There is the one where you feel beautiful. When the world is a gorgeous, lovely place and it was made just for you.

Then there is the one where you've just made someone's day brighten up. When people smile as they see you and laugh at your jokes. When you're noticed. When you're wanted. When you're happy.

And then there is this kind of beautiful.

Faye's kind of beautiful.

The kind where your smile is sensational yet unconscious.

The kind when your laugh is a fucking symphony but you don't bother to notice.

The kind when your eyes are the stars and you don't know they're burning.

The silent kind of beauty. The unknown beauty. When you're a miracle and you don't know it.

And, at the moment, that was Faye.

She sat beside me in the car, wind washing over her face and tugging her hair into the air behind her.

Her feet were resting on the dashboard, and normally that would annoy me if anybody else did it, but when she did, it was like that position was made for her.

Her eyes were trained on the passing greenery, distant as they looked out over the early morning, glorious sky. Her fingers fiddled with her phone, in her hands, and she bit her lip distractedly, mind elsewhere yet still driving me crazy.

She was glorious. And it was killing me.

Because somebody as glorious as her shouldn't have had to go through what she did. The pain and the lost and the suffering.

It hurt me somewhere deep inside when I thought about how she'd looked when I'd finally been able to drag her away from her nightmare.

She'd looked lost and scared and small.

She'd looked broken.

And it'd killed me.

Because someone with so much joy and laughter and life in them shouldn't be so broken. But she was.

And I wanted to fix it. To put her back together.

And if she couldn't be fixed, if some part of her bright, bright heavy soul was gone; was with her little sister and father, then I'd give her my own.

Then I'd take a little piece of mine and hand it over with a smile and a promise.

So she can be whole again.

So she can be happy again.

She deserved it.

'Where are we going again?' I asked Faye and she blinked, coming back from her stupour. A smile danced across her face but it was slightly forced and I struggled to keep my grin in place. She'd never forced her smiles before; never had difficulty keeping them on.
