Axel Winter liked Faye.
That was the first thing I figured out about him. Be it the sneaky sideways glances when she wasn't looking, or the constant urge to touch her, to hold her hand, swing his arm around her shoulder.
Or maybe it was the softening of his eyes and the appearance of a small smile every time he glanced at her that gave the game away.
But this much was obvious. Axel Winter like Faye.
I didn't know what to think about that. The fact that he did or the fact that she had absolutely no idea about it.
Or the fact that every time I looked at her tonight, I saw her wild hair and her laughing eyes and her gorgeous smile and I felt like tearing my eyes away had to be one of the hardest fucking things on this planet.
But Faye, being Faye, remained clueless.
And thank God for that.
Sitting behind her and Axel on the roller coaster, I saw her raise her and Axel's linked hands as the roller coaster descended, her scream of delight entering my ears even over the loud ride and the whistling wind in my ears. It tugged at something inside of me.
As the ride finished, we all tumbled out of our seats and scrambled down the narrow staircase, once again throwing around glances to see where to go next.
'Let's go to the hammer!' Avril yelled over the noise of the fair, pointing towards the ride, drawing our eyes to it.
The ride was one of those that did a whole 360 degree turn in the air. It was long and lean, stretching so high into the sky I could barely make out the top.
Awesome.
We all took off towards it and that's when the crazy night really started.
From one ride to the other, bumper cars, twisting machines that made you feel like puking, haunted houses that were so lame I laughed my ass off and food. So, so much food.
We feasted on hotdogs and corndogs. On French fries and burgers. On cotton candy and caramel apples. On drinks and juices. Enough food to last us a lifetime. Or, in that case, the night.
It was close to midnight, the time the fair would be closing, that we all approached the last ride. Heads raised towards it and eyes following its movement; each of us grasping a different coloured stick of huge cotton candy in our hands.
'This feels so cliche,' Faye whispered from beside me and I choked on a laugh, earning a weird look from Caleb. I flipped him off. He blew me a kiss.
Bitch.
'So are we going to stare at it all night or are we getting in?' Ian yelled, glancing down at all of us. 'Not that I have any problem posing here with you guys,' he continued, 'I think we look pretty kick ass. Minus the cotton candy of course.'
Everybody simultaneously groaned and slapped their foreheads.
'Great job Ian,' Faye yelled over to him, 'you just ruined the moment.'
