Strangled Angel

Chapter Eighteen

When we reached and saw Grandma awake, I took a breath of relief but Adrien still had a vacant expression on his face. Grandma saw us standing near the door and tried giving us a smile but when she read Adrien's expression she looked at him in pity.

"Why didn't you tell us earlier?" Adrien asked still at the door, an angry expression taking the place of the vacant one. Grandma looked down at her bedsheet, not able to say anything. I pulled Adrien by the arm and bought him near Grandma. He was almost in tears when he saw Grandma surrounded by tubes, but he gulped the emotions in.

"I'm sorry Adrien. I didn't want you to worry." She said reaching to hold Adrien's hand but he jerked it away.

"All I have is you, you know that. But despite knowing the fact, you chose to ignore it." He replied looking away.

I started wondering, where was Adrien's mom? What about his dad? I've never seen them, nor have I ever heard about them. It can't be that they both... I was snapped away from my thoughts when I heard Grandma replying, "You have Trixie." I turned to look from Adrien at Grandma. Was she planning on leaving it all on me? But, I would be leaving soon, then how?

Grandma saw the startled expression on my face and asked me, "You will right? Stay by his side, when I'm not there." I blinked into tears. I couldn't hold it back. Grandma was deciding to leave me by his side. She actually believed in me. She believed me enough to leave everything on me, when all I've done is make her worry and sad. How could she trust a bad person like me? I held her hand and let out a sob. "Don't go." I managed to say. "We need you. Adrien needs you."

Adrien held me by my shoulder to comfort me when it was him who needed comforting. He looked at Grandma and said, "Don't go, please don't." He took a deep breath and blinked his eyes to make the tears go away. Seeing us Grandma burst into tears. She held our hands. Her left holding mine and her right holding Adrien's. But then, suddenly her breathing became abnormal. The machines around us started beeping and the doctor immediately came in. We were forced to go outside as we saw more tubes and wires starting to surround her. She was rushed to the ICU and we went behind her. As we waited outside, Adrien came up to me and held my hand. "Nothing will happen right?" He asked his eyes red and his forehead sweating. Seeing him like this made me even more worried about the situation.

"Nothing will happen." I said as lump was formed in my throat. I had a negative feeling about this, but I still had to stay positive. Grandma has to stay. She can't just leave. What will happen to Adrien then?

We were startled when he heard the doctors coming out of the ICU. We ran towards them to hear what they had to say. They looked at us for sometime and then shook their head. "Her cancer was at the last stage. We tried everything we could, but we couldn't save her. We're sorry..." He said and shook his head. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I fell on my knees. It can't be. I must be having a bad reverie because I was leaving soon. I thought of all the excuses I could to prevent myself from believing what the doctor had just said. The tears couldn't stop falling from my eyes. I let out a cry and suddenly my mind was filled with all those moments I had spent with Grandma.

The time she told I could stay even though I was a complete stranger, when she admissioned me into school with Adrien and took care of me, cooking breakfast for her, helping her in the shop, thinking about all of it made me cry even more. I somehow contained myself and wiped the tears off my face. I looked up to see Adrien, but he wasn't beside me anymore. He was just here, then where did he go?

I went around searching for him but instead I found Coel exiting the hospital. Beside him was Grandma, walking away to the underworld. I rushed towards him and startled him by coming in his way, even though I knew I wouldn't be able to stop him as he could go through me. "Let Adrien meet Grandma one last time. They couldn't even say farewell properly." I requested him.
