I woke up the next morning with the sound of glass shattering loudly and violently. I wore my slippers and quickly rushed downstairs to see what the matter was.
When I reached, Adrien was standing in the kitchen dumbstruck at something lying on the floor.
I ran over to him and looked at the pieces of glass scattered all over the floor.
What happened here? And what exactly fell that left Adrien filled with guilt?
"What happened?" I finally asked him when I saw that he wouldn't explain without asking him about it.
"I broke it." Adrien said still looking at the shattered pieces of glass across the floor, especially looking at a word written on one of the broken pieces.
Thanks Adrien, that was very informative.
I looked closer at that piece he was looking at and found that it had the letter 'G' beautifully painted on it with golden color.
I started guessing the words that could start from it. G as in glow? Or was it Good Morning? Most probably that because it was something likely to be written on a utensil, or whatever he broke.
"Or is it a cup?" I accidentally said out loud.
"Grandma gave me that cup on my birthday and it's really precious to me. Then how could I be so clumsy?" He asked himself still looking at that one piece of glass.
"I'm so sorry." I said, because I didn't know what else to say. I wanted to tell him that it was just a cup and that maybe I could buy him another one with the same things written on it as this one had.
But I knew that that wouldn't make up for his broken heart, especially when it was Grandma who gave it to him. I knew nothing would be able to replace that cup.
I suddenly wanted to console him and give him a hug. Maybe he would feel better that way. But I didn't.
Before I could do or say anything, Adrien turned around to leave.
"Where are you going?" I asked him.
"To get ready for school." He replied.
"Oh okay... But, are you okay?" I asked and instantly felt stupid for asking him that. Of course he wasn't okay.
"Yeah. I guess..." He replied and with that he left to get ready for school while I stood there staring at the glass pieces and especially the 'G'. I wanted to know what had been written on the cup. Suddenly I got an idea and decided to pick them up. I wouldn't throw them away, but I would fix the pieces back together instead.
So I sat down and collected each piece delicately, making sure not to break them even more. I kept them in a small plastic box and closed the lid and went to my room. I kept the plastic box in one of my drawers and started getting ready for school. I would find time whenever I'm free to fix the cup.
When I was ready, I went down to make our lunch. There was nothing but onions and eggs left in the refrigerator.
I quickly grabbed them and made scrambled eggs for us to eat later. For breakfast we had some cereal left, so that would make up for it.
Once Adrien came down he looked more calm then earlier, but even so, he didn't talk or look at me even once when we were eating.
After breakfast, we quickly wore our shoes and headed outside to go to school.
"Adrien?" I called out while we were almost half way to school.
"Hmm?"
"You're not angry about what happened in the morning are you?" I asked him as slowly and with the sweetest voice I'd ever used before, being careful not to make him angry.
