Engulfed by Shadows

Not too far way...
My blood pumped in my veins from the frustration and anxiety that built up. It was about time that I head out into the cover of the dimly lit streets. As my hands turned the knob of the door to open it, a sound of a mysterious and faint gunshot came to my ears. I stepped outside and my eyes immediately darted here and there, searching for the source of such a sound. And yet all I could see was pitch blackness. Not a single candlelight to be seen. I found it bizarre that none of the candles that silently flicker as they do every evening till they burn out...out.. Have they already burnt out? How could that be?
My hands moved around searching for something to grasp. A railing. A specific one in which connected to the small steps ahead of me. My searching abruptly ended as I stepped too far and collapsed down the steps in a flurry. Cursing loudly I sat on the ground. I could feel a scrape and a portion of my clothes torn from the fall. Irritation filled me and I jumped up off the ground. But my annoyance left as soon as I heard whispers around me. They were incoherent and ominous. To add to the peculiar voices, I felt eyes on me. My heart rate quickened a bit and I longed to see just a small flicker of light to reassure me somehow. The air suddenly got colder and a strange dark, thickness overcame me. My thoughts raced through my mind, trying to figure out what to do. My eyes glanced up and I saw clouds covering the moon and stars. Abruptly, my legs collapsed under me.
I felt myself being engulfed by the shadows...
