Chapter 9
Confusion Within the Crowd
A. Burr
"A...subway," I muttered, unconsciously.
I stood there on the steps, leading down to the subway trains. People were brushing past us and some gave us irritated glares before turning away. Meanwhile, Hamilton was hyperventilating, grasping onto the rusty railing, a wave of information filled my brain... I was just frozen there...dazed and confused...
How?
Why?
Wha-?
A variety of knowledge...the peculiar technology...some of slang...? Of course there was so much more...but I am still struggling to comprehend how and why this has happened... Then, I sprung out of my daze with a jolt and glanced behind my shoulder...
A man with stringy black hair, empty eyes and a crooked grin, holding a large bag walked right in. My instincts told me to grab Hamilton, run away and tell authorities... I followed those instincts...
As quick as a bolt of lighting, I raced down grasping onto Hamilton's coat and practically dragged him away from harm's range...
"What in the name of-?"Hamilton started with his violet-blue eyes going crazy in panic. I put my hand over his mouth.
"Shh..."I whispered and caught a glance over the wall and stiffened. The strange man was looking me... He walked towards us with a crazed look on his face... Shit...
I pulled Alexander by his coat once again and looked around quickly for a restroom or something... To no prevail, I acknowledged the small area and that there were hardly any places to hide... My breath became quick with paranoia but was able to decide on a risky move...
Hamilton shouted protests as I push him toward the place where your Metrocard would be scanned... We had none...and we had no choice...
"Jump," I told him urgently.
His eyes widened and his mouth opened in pure shock.
"I beg your pardon-?!" he started. I interrupted again but with more hurry in the tone, for the man was basically on our heels...
"JUMP OVER THE THING, ALEXANDER!" I exclaimed, getting highly irritated with the man.
I noticed some stares from people but I didn't care we needed to get the hell out of here quickly... So much for finding authority...they'll find us... You know what? Fuck it. I leaped over and pulled Hamilton over the thing. He made an alarmed noise. He didn't expect anything like this from me...Neither did I, to be honest...
The man leaped over too...
I ran for it...
Hamilton followed, noticing the man...
He caught up to me and struggled to ask me something.
"W-who is t-that man?" He asked taking a breath or two in between.
"I-I have no idea..."I gasped...
A subway rushed in...
We got on...
.....
Some people gave us strange looks and I tried my best to ignore it.
Hamilton was clinging desperately to the pole at the machine moved... I sighed. Not only do our outfits make us look out of place, but this guy hanging on if his life is on the line most certainly gives it away...
"Hamilton...that it only making us more prominent and that's not very good considering our situation!"I loudly whispered to him in a scolding matter. I held on to the pole looking at his annoyingly.
"Well, do excuuussee me, Mister Burr. I wasn't prepared to jump about like a madman, then run onto this...this contraption! Also, since when were acquainted with a crazed drunkard!" he exclaimed throwing his arms into the air to add to the effect but had to grab the pole again because the subway train stopped at a station.
"I was never acquainted with a lunatic!" I argued back.
"Oh, is that right? Then, why was the man chasing after us, as if he he knew us?!" Hamilton argued back at me.
I opened my mouth to respond but I could not find words to answer his question. Of course he felt the need to ask another question...
"Lastly, what is a subway, Burr? I heard you say it back on the stairway," he asked. I was honestly surprised he had given his condition at the time...
"Oh...uh that's the name of this train," I answered but it kind of came out as a question...
"Train? Aaron Burr, sir, you are making no sense at all?" Alexander spoke in a tone I could only describe as concern.
"Look, Alexander, it's hard to say...but I seem to have been gifted with the knowledge of this time period..." I whispered awkwardly into his ear.
Alexander, not convincingly, raised an eyebrow as a response.
He laughed...
"Burr, you are most certainly mad!" Alexander chuckled.
"This isn't a joke!" I started, "Look I even know what today's date is..."
This time his face before slightly intrigued and serious but I could tell he was still skeptical of all this.
"Today is June 12, 2017. Look, I can prove it to you," I said as I walked over to an older lady sitting down in a seat.
"Excuse me, Miss? May you tell me the date of today? My friend here is a bit confused," I told her with a smile and gestured to Hamilton when I mentioned "friend".
He isn't exactly my friend but still...
"Oh! Sure...it's uh June 11. I mean 12! 2017," She answered me happily.
"Okay, thank you, Miss,"I responded, putting my hand up as a sort of "goodbye" gesture, as I walked back towards Hamilton.
"See? I told you. It's-" I started but getting interrupted by a distracted Hamilton.
"He is here..."
"What?"
"The man...he is over there...watching us..."
I turned toward the direction in which Hamilton was looking at...
Fuck...
