Chapter 17
The Feathers
E. Hamilton Sr.
It has been a little over three years since my husband has seemingly vanished off the face of the earth... My children all had mixed feelings about the matter. The youngest held little to no memory of him now. My god...the children have been growing... Some already started their own individual lives out of the nest.
The search party have given up on me, they told me that it's no use... They said to me that he is goner. Foolish, I believed of them to think of such things. I more than willing to wait for him...
Angelica came back to New York upon hearing that there is no leads and folks have given up all over. She was a little...upset with him, claiming that he must've abandoned me and the children. The thought of that broke my heart onto many shards. Angelica quickly apologized and held me tight in comfort.
Not only do I fret for him...but Mister Burr is also missing with no leads. I had told his daughter about it all a while ago but received no response. My brain bubbled with what could've happened to him...
One day I tore through his office seeking an answer... May he had written quite a lot. Documents, letters, poems, etc. He wrote so much...
I felt stupid for not trying to seek the answer before, but in the end I had not found anything to help with the case. I did however discover letters...to his deceased friend. It caused guilt to find the uh special relationship the two had... I was shocked to say the least...
As I turned to left the small room with a sigh of defeat, I saw something stuck to the window frame.
I scurried over to pull out a white feather...
That's new...
.......
"Eliza! D-do you know this means?" Angelica asked me waving the pure white feather in front of my face.
"No, not really..." I spoke honestly.
"It's a feather from an angel! From the heavens! I think Alexa-"Angelica went on but paused what she was saying.
"Are you saying my Alexander can possibly be...dead?" I mumbled in disbelief.
"I-I am afraid so..." she muttered sadly.
"No..." I spoke, sitting down.
"I'm so sorry...Eliza," she said rubbing my back, quietly.
"H-how could he be dead?" I cried out.
"I don't know, honey," she answered with tears in her eyes.
My own eyes began to flood with tears at the news.
I-It can't be...
.......
I stood at the grave without a body to bury, heartbroken and silent. The name of the stone and the dates... It all felt like a big joke to me. I couldn't believe it...
Numb and full of disbelief I turned to leave when I caught sight of another feather. It was sticking out of the ground in front of the gravestone.
How did I not notice it before?
Quietly, I snatched it up and stared at it. It was a bright orange...
What does it mean? I-Is he somehow alive somewhere? What all this mistake? A foolish mistake? Alexander...where are you?
