The walk towards the kingdom seemed longer than the walk towards the war. Everyone was confused, relieved and also cautious at the same time. Many of the knights stood well away from Castiel but Dean knew that it was because, like himself, they didn't fully understand the power that came from him.
His father had told him to find out everything about him but he didn't even know where to start and what you ask him. Even though they had some privacy, riding well in front of the entire army alone, all that past between them was silence. Finally however, Dean plucked up the courage to ask him a simple question.
"How are you feeling?" He asked in a quiet voice and at first he didn't even think Castiel had heard him but the omega finally answered.
"Tired and miserable." Was his reply, not even looking at Dean as he made it.
"Castiel, I want to thank you." Dean said abruptly and Castiel finally looked sideways at him and narrowed his eyes. Dean took this as a sign to carry on. "You saved a lot of lives yesterday. Perhaps even my own life and the life of my father. The knights may be wary now but they will come to realise that you have saved most of them from a dreadful fate."
Castiel sighed in reply rather than the smile that dean was suspecting. He never really got to see Castiel smile, it was one of the rare sights, the eighth wonder of the world to see the omega crack a small shy smile or a cheeky grin. But he barely ever did it, and Deans heart dropped when his words, rather than lift the omegas spirits, in fact made him seem more wary.
"It doesn't feel that way. They all seem afraid of me, you see the way they draw further and further behind of us wanting to get a much distance away from me as possible. I wanted them to respect me, not fear me."
"You moved the earth, Castiel. Quite literally. The shock of seeing that rests of the hearts of the men and it still effects me in a way I can't put into words. You forced nature apart, sending a crack throughout the earth, I can't imagine what this did to other parts of the country or even the world-"
"Pan told me I caused earthquakes." Castiel said miserably, not turned his head to look at Dean but instead cast his eyes forwards, unable to look anywhere else as if he had caused himself the utmost shame. Dean nodded his head seriously and then gave a low chuckle which made Castiels grip on his reins angrily.
"Every day, I feel like I've figured you out." Dean said, not even noticing the grimace that had begun to appear on Castiels face. However with these words, Castiels grimace dropped to more a look of confusion.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, i felt like I had figured you all out. When you appeared at the camp on the first day and demanded that you travel with us, a part of me knew that you were going to turn up. I was proud of myself for realising it cause it meant that I had finally figured you out. I had finally realised the intentions of your heart and what lengths you would go to to protect people. But then you do something else, something that utterly surprises me and takes the words right out of my mouth. Something like moving the ground from beneath us to separate two armies that were almost set on slaughtering each other."
Castiel thought about this for a minute and they rode in silence as he came up with something to say.
"You have figured me out." Castiel said finally, nodding more to himself than to dean.
"How so?"
"Well, you said that you figured out the intentions of my heart and the lengths I would go to protect people, you may have not realised the lengths that I was able to go, but you figured out that I would go as far as I could. They may not be my people by faith or nationality but they are my people through marriage. I don't know how to describe it."
