"When will she wake up?"
My sleep was disturbed when I heard people's voices, I wasn't able to finish my dream....
Wait..
What was I dreaming anyway?..
And whose voices am I hearing?
"She's awake!" a girl screamed as soon as we locked eyes. Who is she?
I scanned room I was in. It was packed with people. Well, not really. The room was just too small.. it's too small for five people to fit in.
As soon as the girl's scream sank into the others' minds they automatically went to the sides of my bed, crowding at me.
"Sweetheart, you're awake."
"How are you feeling?"
"Thank goodness you're conscious."
They were talking all at the same time I couldn't think straight. I looked at their faces one by one - a middle aged lady, a middle aged man, a teen aged boy, and the girl who screamed. They felt familiar, but I wasn't sure. I was thinking who they were...
But then my head started throbbing.
I cried in pain. "My head. Ah!" I grunted. It hurts like hell. I don't know what to do. My head felt like it's being torn in the middle.
"What's happening?!" the lady panicked.
"What are you feeling?" the girl who screamed earlier asked.
"Call the doctor!" After the old man ordered them, that's when I realized I was in a hospital. The boy in his teens ran out of the room, while the middle aged lady was pressing a button on the wall repeatedly while crying 'oh my goodness' over and over again.
I brushed my hands to my hair pulling the strands hoping it would lessen the pain, but to no avail. I curled my legs to my chest, I felt cold.
Why is everyone in panic! They're stressing me even more. The lady pressing the button on the wall looked the most worried. I'm scared. Someone stop this. I felt my cheeks stained with my tears.
Just then, the boy who left the room before came back with two doctors, one at his 50's and the other at his late 20's maybe, and a nurse.
"Why is she like this? What's going on? What's happening to her?" the old man asked the younger doctor, but he didn't answer. He went straight to me. With my hands still in my hair, I dropped my head down not wanting to show what a mess I am at the moment. I don't know why I was still conscious of my face when my head hurts like crazy.
"Mia." He called. Was he talking to me?
He stretched his arms to reach my shoulders, and bent his body to level with me, "Look at me." His voice a mix of worry and command.
I lifted my gaze. When our eyes locked with each other, somehow I felt relaxed, maybe just a little bit. His eyes provided comfort. Those pair of hazel, narrow eyes. It's like it was chanting a spell on me. All I could see was him.
His eyes were intently staring at mine. "What are you feeling?" He asked, and suddenly all of it came back. The pain, the stress, the tears.
"Pain." I cried, but my eyes never left his.
My eyes were pleading, 'stop this please', it screams.
He moved to the older doctor who was busy analyzing whatever data was on the machine connected to my body.
They talked for just a few seconds, then I felt the nurse by my side.. holding a needle.. with liquid dripping from the tip of it.
"This would help numb the pain, Ms. Mia" she told me.
"What? No!" I said covering my shoulders with my hands. I don't trust her. I don't even know what kind of drug that is!
"Mia, it's just a shot. One shot and it's over." the old man frustratingly shouted.
"It's probably the stress that she's feeling that's triggering her fear." the older doctor explained. His presence made me feel uneasy, he was intimidating. He has a cold aura, which made me scared of him.
My eyes landed to the doctor who talked to me. My eyes asked for help. I don't know why, but I felt like he's the only person whom I can cry for help.
He moved to my left side, opposite to the nurse. I was taken aback when he suddenly sat beside me, pulling me close to his chest. "This won't hurt, relax." His right hand at my upper back, while his other hand was holding my right wrist.
He looked at the nurse, I followed his gaze. I felt him give a little nod to the nurse. That's when I realized he was signaling the nurse to do it, he was holding me to restrain myself from moving.
My eyes widen, but before I could react he hushed me.
"Shh, it's okay."
His voice made me weak.
All I could do was to shut my eyes and lean my head to him to cover my face. He was still holding me.
I felt the sting that made me gasp. I started counting in my head to keep myself calm.
When it was over, he gave gentle pats on my head. It made me feel like a child, a child asking her mom for comfort after having nightmares.
He's a complete stranger, but he felt warm.
"She might be in a state of shock right now. She needs to avoid stress. It would be better if only a few people would stay by her side. She may feel discomfort or pressure if you crowd on her." The old doctor explained. "Anyway, Alex would always be here, so if you want to rest, it would be fine. You all have stayed here for two weeks now. We'll be doing tests to see how she's recovering when her emotional state is stable."
"Yes. Now that she's woken up, I think it's our turn to have some sleep. Thank you, Dr. Montes." The old man replied.
"I'll be going now." the older doctor said.
I hear footsteps, the door swinging open.. then close, a few sighs, like something stuck in their throats were removed, that suddenly they could breathe comfortably; and a heartbeat. His heartbeat.
He was still here. And I didn't want him to leave.
He was moving his hands up and down my back, silently lulling me to sleep. Slowly, I felt my eyelids being heavy. Is it because of the shot, or because him? I'm not entirely sure. I don't remember when, but everything just went black.
