It was a Sunday morning and Mia woke up early to cook, not just breakfast; she decided to make some mac and cheese.
After days of thinking, she finally made up her mind to visit her family and will continue to every once in a while. She realized there's no fixing their relationship if she would just avoid them. This is her being strong and doing her promise to herself. She's still not sure how she'd face her dad, but she'll take it slow. It's been two weeks since her last visit. She decided to go, so here she is trying to make some mac and cheese to bring for later. She's planning on bringing up the subject of the trip while she's there.
When she was done with everything, she went upstairs to wake Alex. When she got to their room though, he was already sitting up.
Mia stood by the door, "Good morning."
"'morning," Alex groggily replied with a small smile and half closed eyes.
Mia walked to stand in front of him, "Come on, breakfast is ready." She held her hands out to help Alex stand, but when Alex took her hand, he pulled Mia causing her to fall on the bed.
Mia squealed as she landed on top of her husband, "Alex!" She hissed, hitting his chest with her hand, which Alex only replied with a laugh.
Alex placed Mia to his side, snuggling her close, "Just a few more minutes."
"We'll end up sleeping for an hour." Mia heard him chuckle. He freed Mia and stood up, helping Mia after.
They ate breakfast side by side, and in the middle of their meal, Mia spoke, "Let's visit my parents' house today." She announced, her eyes staying low, continuing her meal like it wasn't a big deal.
She could feel Alex's eyes on her, but she never met his. She could see his smile through her peripheral vision. When she still hasn't heard a reply, she willed herself to look up at him, "What? Do you have other plans? Or is it okay to visit them-"
Mia stopped when Alex leaned in to give her a kiss on the cheek. "Okay," Alex answered, smiling.
On their way to Mia's parents, she became extremely quiet. Alex always took worried glances while driving until he couldn't take the silence anymore.
"Have you told them your visiting?" Alex spoke.
It was like Mia was brought back to reality when she heard her husband's voice. "Huh? Yeah, of course. I texted Maven."
"You didn't forget to bring the mac and cheese, right?"
"It's in the back."
"Okay, just making sure."
"Why are you reminding me all of those after we've already left?" Mia raised a brow.
"I only thought about it now," He lied to make her smile, which Mia did with a shake of her head. He already knew those facts, but he just couldn't stand seeing Mia tensed.
Just then he felt a hand creep on his free one, intertwining them together. He looked back at Mia who is now staring at the window. He gave her hand a squeeze for encouragement, and let her be.
When they reached the house, Mia let Alex lead them to the door but they had a small fight on who should ring the doorbell.
"Ring the doorbell," Mia instructed when she noticed Alex hasn't done it.
"You do it," he countered.
"Just press it, Alex."
"Shouldn't you do it?"
"Why can't you? It's just a damn doorbell."
"Then you do it."
"Ugh, fine." Mia surrendered. She saw Alex smirk which made her roll her eyes.
Mia stood forward, breathing in before ringing the doorbell. It didn't take long for the door to be opened.
"Hey," Maven greeted them at the door. Mia released her breath she didn't know she was holding. She was glad Maven was the one who opened the door.
"Hi," she greeted back stepping inside.
"Hey man," Maven greeted Alex which the latter returned through a pat on his back.
"How have you been?" Alex started when they've sat in the living room.
"Great, it's my vacation, so there's not a lot going on."
"That's great. We're actually planning on a trip with you guys, right Mia?"
"Yeah. We went here to talk about that," Mia answered briefly, and right then her mom showed up. "Hi mom, " Mia stood up and went to her, kissing her cheek. "I brought some food to eat later. Where should I put it?"
Her mom looked at her stunned. Mia faced her so naturally it actually surprised everyone. A few seconds have passed, but her mom hasn't answered yet so Mia walked straight to the kitchen instead, "I'll put it somewhere in the fridge, we can just reheat this. It's already gone cold anyway."
Mia may seem composed on the outside, but her insides were shaking. She was trying her best not to be emotional.
Help yourself.
She keeps repeating to herself.
"Y-yes, of course, sweetie. Thank you," Her mom replied who followed her to the kitchen. "Have you ate lunch already?"
"No, not yet," Mia answered.
"Great, I cooked for the five of us." Her mom smiled at her, and she smiled back even though it didn't reach her eyes. She's still tensed anyway.
The two of them joined Alex and Maven in the living room after.
"Mom's cooking roasted chicken for lunch and some vegetables. I can't wait, I'm already hungry," Maven talked as the two ladies sat. Mia, of course, sat beside Alex while their Mom sat at the single couch.
"Wow, I guess we're having a feast," Alex commented.
"Damn, right. You guys should come here more often so I get to eat some good stuff- Ow!" Maven felt someone hit his head after what he said.
"You talk like we don't feed you properly," Their mom scolded in which the couple laughed.
"What I'm saying is you don't cook as much when it's just the three of us." Their mom only rolled her eyes at her son's complain.
Just then they heard the door unlock and their dad came in.
Alex immediately looked back at Mia and seeing her stiffen, he made the first interaction instead.
Alex stood up, shook her dad's hand and greeted him, "Sir."
Her dad gave him a small smile and then shifted his eyes at Alex's back, where Mia was.
They locked eyes for a second, and Mia breathed, "Hey dad."
