After our little camping excursion, classes resumed, and Junior fibbed when he said the college was holding parents' weekend at school. We needed to get them here with no excuses from them. I don't think they would not show up no matter what, but we weren't taking any chances.
We waited as each set of parents arrived. The younger kids were staying with Grandpa and Grandma for the weekend because it was better this way.
Once our parents arrived, we all greeted them, but it was tense. We stood in front of them, face-to-face as if there was a standoff between them and us. Our parents finally realized there was no parent weekend, and they were here for another purpose.
"They have had us," Frazier said to them.
"No shit, Sherlock," Jordan said.
"We should have seen this coming," Dad added.
"Got to hand it to them, we taught them well," Elena said.
"A little too well," Marissa agreed.
"Just so we're all on the same page, we're here because they know," Gail said. Everyone looked at her, "Just checking."
"Lucy, you have some explaining to do," Elijah said, imitating Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy. We all looked at him. "What? Well, they do."
We turned back to them, rolling our eyes as Dad asked, "Can someone talk about why the hell you lied to us and talked us into a non-existent parent weekend?"
"Maybe this will help clear up any confusion you may have," I said, tossing a small container to him. He caught it and looked at it.
"You brought us here to show us an empty container. Fantastic," Frazier said to us.
"No, wise-ass, it's what's inside of the container is why we brought you here," Drew spat back.
Dad opened it and pulled out a cigarette butt, then sighed. It didn't surprise me that it didn't shock him, nor were the others.
"So, who would like to start first?" Junior asked.
Our parents looked at each other, and each one said, "Not it, leaving Frazier the last man out."
"Damn it. Every fucking time," Frazier grumbled.
"We can't help if you're slow on the uptake," Jordan said to him.
Frazier glared at Jordan as he shrugged. "Fine, the truth is Mitchell escaped the night shit hit the fan, and we've been looking for him ever since. There, are you happy now?"
"Well, we would be happier if you would have told us that night instead of hiding it from us," Junior said to him.
"Oh, gee, son, I'm sorry we were only doing what we thought was in your best interest," Frazier snapped at Junior.
"Our best interest? Are you fucking kidding me right now? That dick knob showed up when we're sleeping and could have taken any of us out! But you thought it was in our best interest," Junior roared at Frazier, causing them almost to come to blows before Marissa stepped in between them.
"Dylan, Jr! That is enough!" Marissa ordered.
"Come on, Mom! You've got to be kidding me!" Junior yelled.
As they started arguing, so did the rest of us, leaving Mom not saying anything as she stood there, watching us go at it with each other. Then she used two fingers and whistle getting our attention.
"Enough!" Mom shouted.
We all stopped and stared at her.
Mom took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, feeling the panic build from us staring at her. Mom always hated when people stared at her. It increased her anxiety, but this time she took a few deep breaths then continued, "Arguing is getting us nowhere. It's dividing us, which is what he's waiting for from us. Yes, we didn't tell you, kids, for the simple fact we didn't want to worry you, but you are right, we should have told you. The fact is Mitchell is loose. The question is, how do we stop him?"
