Dad and Frazier went inside the house, closing the door behind them. Mom came out of the kitchen with Marissa, Elena, and Jordan.
"Where are the kids?" Mom asked.
"Well, you see, there was a slight snafu when we were getting ready to leave," Frazier said.
"What do you mean, slight snafu?" Marissa asked, furrowing her eyebrows.
"Something about one last class they had to take care of," Dad said casually.
"What last class? When I talked to Elijah, he said he finished. Where the hell are our kids, Ryan?" Elena yelled.
Jordan quietly slipped out of the room, going to the kitchen. He gave the younger kids the signal while the mothers jumped all over Dad and Frazier. He walked back into the room quietly, and Elena looked at him. "Do you believe this shit?"
Jordan shrugged, feigning shock.
"Dylan Michael Frazier! Where is my son?" Marissa shouted at Frazier.
Then the front door opened with RJ and the younger kids walking in and said, "Look who we brought with us?"
Davina, Hope, Drew, Scarlett, and Leo came walking in behind them. While they were so focused on seeing where we were, we snuck in through the back, and the four of us stood behind our moms.
They all stood there while our mothers yelled at them, and then Elijah tapped Elena on the shoulder. "Miss me?"
Elena turned around and screamed with happiness.
"You know Mom, give Dad a break," Junior whispered in Marissa's ear. She turned and pulled him into a hug.
Mom looked at them, and her face dropped as we dodged her viewpoint. Then before she, as she turned to look at Dad, we popped in front of her. "Did you think we would leave you hanging?" I asked.
"Seriously, Mom," Liz said. Mom grabbed us and hugged us both.
Then she looked at Dad. "You're a dead man."
"Eh, I think I can handle it," Dad smirked.
Our families hugged us, and Mom walked over to Scarlett and Leo. "I see we have two new guests." They both grinned at her. "Leo, what's this I heard about you kissing my son?"
"Well," Leo said, stammering, trying to explain himself.
"You got to lay off the alcohol. It solves nothing," Mom advised Leo.
"Yes, ma'am," Leo responded to her.
"Okay, everyone, get settled, and we will meet here for dinner," Mom announced to all of us. "Ryan is cooking for everyone."
We all cheered as Dad groaned, "Fine."
"RJ, show Scarlett and Leo to their rooms, please," Mom told RJ.
"Yes, Mom," RJ said, waving Scarlett and Leo to follow him.
Liz and Drew went upstairs, and Mom looked at me, "We good, Matthew?"
"Yeah, I got an appointment next week," I said to her. She touched my cheek and smiled. I leaned over and kissed her on the side of the cheek. Then I went upstairs to get settled.
She looked at Dad. "Let's hope this is a drama-free summer."
"They're home, and they're safe," Dad said, putting his hands on her shoulders.
"Matthew has lost weight," she said to him.
"That's fine because I will make sure I fatten him up before he heads back next year," he grinned.
"That's a good thing because I worry about the twins," Mom told Dad.
"I know you do, baby. Now come on. Frazier is coming back to help me with the meal tonight," Dad said, taking her hand and walking into the kitchen.
Frazier returned an hour later along with Jordan and helped Dad get dinner ready for everyone.
"How's Matthew?" Jordan asked.
"He's fine for now, but I got to tell you, he scared the shit out of me the other night. I've never heard him frantic like that," Dad said as he stirred the sauce. Then he looked at Mom, then back at them. "He shook up Alex that night."
"Yeah, Elena told me she was a nervous wreck when I returned from checking on Josh," Jordan added.
"I'm glad they were able to stay with her," Dad said to them.
"That's what family is for, Ryan. Marissa could keep her calm," Frazier said.
"Yeah, but I knew until we returned with all of them, she would not relax," Dad said as the three of them looked at Mom with Elena and Marissa, talking and laughing.
"Let's hope things stay calm," Frazier said.
They went back to getting dinner ready, and I was upstairs unpacking when Scarlett knocked on my door. I turned to see her leaning next to the door frame.
"So, this is what your actual bedroom looks like in person? I pictured it so different," she said, looking around as she walked in and sat down on the bed.
I crawled over to her and put my hands on her legs. "And what did you picture?"
She put her hands on my shoulders, leaning into me. "You know hot models on your wall and sports cars." She laughed, and I gave her a look, then kissed her.
"Your mom sent me to get you. Dinner is about ready," she said, pushing me aside and standing up. She took my hands and helped me up. We went downstairs and met everyone in the kitchen.
Dad looked at all of us. "Before we eat, I have a few words to say."
We all groaned.
"Hey, now. My house, my rules," Dad told everyone.
"Just get on with it," Jordan said with a sigh.
"Tonight, we welcome the older kids home for the summer, and we also welcome some new friends," Dad said, looking at Scarlett and Leo. "In this house, we are family, no matter what," he said, looking at each one of us. "Family is important. We're there for each other. We have each other's back. Never forget to be there for each other when needed."
We all looked at each other, then at him as he finished, "Now let's eat!"
We cheered and dug in. Man, I missed Dad's cooking. We all sat around, laughed, talked, and ate. I was glad to be finally home. The only thing is our happiness will end, at least for one of us tonight.
That is when family comes in...
