Bo was sitting next to his mother and listened carefully to the priest, that talked about love and fate. "One day I also want to love a person that much, like Xiumin loves Jia!", he proudly whispered into his mother's ear. She smiled amused and stroke over Bo's forehead. Bo looked again at the bridal couple and then, rapt in thought, he glimpsed at the sea behind them.
Shocked he opened his eyes and surveyed his mother with a questioning stare.
"Why is the water gone, mummy?"
In this very moment a siren resonated loudly over the whole beach and drowned out the romantic wedding song that was playing. Bo's mother jumped up from the benches and pointed at the sea.
Some distracted guests spectated the problem she was pointing at and began to shriek around.
It was a mess.
Bo could only see, that someone took Jia by the hand and pulled her away from the altar. He watched a man telling her something flustered, and her face turned white. She ran over to Xiumin, called out his name, and that he should run. Shattered he took his wife by the hand and ran away from the sea.
Strange, Bo thought, why is everyone scared of the sea, when it is not even there?
Bo carefully pulled at the skirt of his mother, but she didn't notice, because she was busy telling everyone to calm down. So Bo stopped running after his mother and made his way through the crowd to Jia and Xiumin, that were trying to lead the whole crowd away from the beach. Xiumin noticed Bo, and turned around to Jia.
"Look after Bo! I have to lead the crowd to a higher place. Make sure to stay with Bo, then you will have a chance! I'll see you at the highest place you find!" Then he locked her in a long and endlessly loving hug and whispered softly in her ear.
"You look beautiful in white."
She wiped her tears away and kissed his plush lips passionate, and then turned around to Bo to lift him up.
He looked at her shook and asked her frightened, what was happening.
She just stared to the ocean and mumbled: "The water will come back soon. But not as peaceful, as it has gone."
And then she ran, with Bo silently crying on her shoulder.
"Run!"
That was the only thing that Jia could hear between the masses of people screaming out of fear.
"Run!"
That was the only thing that was in her mind right now.
"Run!"
Away from the beach, search for a high place.
And don't look back.
There was no sense in pushing and shoving yourself through the crowd running up to the hotel. Jia knew another path, but it was much more dangerous and stony than the other way. However, Jia threw her expensive stilettos away and tried to climb up the small path. Bo had his arms wrapped around her and kept quiet bravely. All of a Sudden her bare feet slipped away from the greasy grit and she lost the grip of her hands.
Bo screamed mortally scared, wrapped his arms tighter around her and closed his eyes. Frantically Jia tried to find purchase on the unconsolidated rocks. Finally she felt a quite solid stone, where she could put her foot on. Then she carded her long dress and targeted the hotel resort on top of the cliff.
It felt like an eternity, until they arrived at the top, totally exhausted. Additionally, the siren and the jarring announcements of the coastguards screamed hysterically to the crowd, that they would only have some minutes to the arrival of an tsunami.
Jia had often read about tsunamis, but she had never thought, that she could also be affected.
"Why me? WHY US?!", her head was screaming.
Jia didn't know where to go, when she arrived at the higher situated hotel. Bo had the idea of entering a house and locking the doors. The wave wouldn't be that high anyways, right?
So Jia and Bo hid in one of the houses, that seemed to be on the highest place. It wasn't that easy to walk in the strong wind, that seemed to turn into a heavy, rainy storm, but Jia somehow managed to get her and Bo safe in a house. The five-year old was dithering from fear and from the cold of the rain that had drenched his clothes. Jia rummaged through the house to find a warm pullover for Bo and a more convenient trousers and shirt for her.
Then they humbled down in a corner of the house and Jia whispered some calming words in his ear. The storm was rattling on the door like mad and Bo snuggled himself closer to Jia.
"What will happen to mummy?"
His desperate tears rolled down his face and dripped on the floor.
"I'm so scared Jia!"
She was scared too, scared stiff.
What would happen to Xiumin? Will she see him again soon?
As she didn't know what else to do she just tousled his hair and whisperd something like:
"I'm here...."
