Jongdae woke up with them both locked in his arms. He froze, because the furios wave had snatched away most of his clothes. Also Bo and Jia must be cold, he thought. Are they even...?
Desperately he tried to feel the beat of their hearts. His fingers glided over the arm of the sleeping Bo and stopped at a point at his wrist.
It was weak and quiet, but there was a beat.
another one
With a gasp of relief, he did the same with Jia. As he couldn't feel a heartbeat he searched for another spot on her wrist. It took him some time to realize that there was no beat. Frantically he sat up next to her and touched her neck harried.
Jongdae screamed in despair and looked for any other sign of life in her. She must have swallowed a lot of water. Maybe she even inhaled it.
How long did she already lie here, is there a chance for her?
Without any hesitation Jongdae put her inanimate body on the muddy ground and bended down to her. Tears dropped down on her face , as he stared into her eyes, and got mixed with the blood that was streaming down her face. If she had opened her eyes she would have seen how distraught his eyes sparkled. When his lips met hers to fill her lungs with the air she needed, another tear got entangled in his eyelashes.
At the same time Bo awoke next to them and croaked silently as he saw, how Jongdae was trying to save Jia's life. While Jongdae was trying to make her heart beat again, Bo sat next to her face and sobbed while removing the wisps of hair that were covering her heavily bleeding wound on the head.
"Get away from there Bo.", Jongdae screamed as he noticed his severe crying.
But Bo didn't move and stared at her closed eyelids. He was stuttering something that Jongdae didn't understand.
Jongdae also began to talk to her in his mind. He repeated "Please wake up Jia" for several times, he didn't say it outloud, he was too weak to, but he screamed it in his head, and somehow Jia seemed to feel that. She felt that someone was there, waiting for her to wake up, needing her right now, not leaving her behind, never.
And then she coughed.
As the water had left her lungs she inhaled the icecold air and creased her face in pain.
"We're here", Jongdae whispered quietly and took her hand.
And she knew that. That's why she came back.
Then Jongdae wrapped his arms around her and lifted her up.
"We have to get away from here. The ocean isn't save anymore. The further we get away from it the greater is our chance to get well."
Bo bravely stood up and protested, as Jongdae also wanted to lift him up. Jongdae needed all his strength for Jia. So Bo took all his strength too and walked on his own, step by step.
Step by step leaving the ocean behind them, step by step getting closer to help, step by step into a new chance.
And don't you dare look back.
