Tom's POV:
It's been hard these past few months since Edd had died. Our beloved friend Edd was one of my best friends that I could ever have but even though I didn't show that I cared for anyone, I had actually been taking this super hard.
Edd Gould had died of cancer, leukemia to be almost exact. It's been hard and the depressing atmosphere around here gets worse everyday. Matt's been moping in his room a lot, Tord has been taking his anger out on violence so we've been trying to calm him down, and I've been drinking more than usual to drink away the memories. But I can't seem to forget him. No one can.
The one who's been taking Edd's death the worse is his 4 year old daughter; Y/n Gould. She stays in her room all day laying in bed cuddling with her little teddy bear we gave her and only seems to go out to use the bathroom or get some food if she get's hungry.
Poor kid, Y/n didn't really expect her father to die so quickly. And with her mother already dead from a terrible 10 pile up car crash a year ago, things only seemed to get worse. It's gotten worse for all of us.
I had woken up from a horrible head ache and hangover. I stepped over all the empty beer bottles on the floor of my dark room, trapped my pain killer pills and went over to the bathroom. Once I stepped in front of the mirror, I looked at myself and could barely tell myself from a monster or me.
My hair was all over the place and smelling terrible, my eye...sockets had bags underneath them and my whole body wreaked. I sighed to myself and went downstairs to see everyone eating breakfast already except for me and Y/n.
"Good morning Tom." Matt said, noticing my appearance.
"Morning." Tord added as poured himself some cereal.
"..Morning guys. Did Y/n come down yet?" I asked, even though I already knew that she most likely didn't come down yet.
But before any of them could answer, we all heard a humming sound and footsteps come in the kitchen. We all turned to see Y/n make her way through us as she went to the fridge with a giant smile on her face.
The rest of us looked at each other with a confused expression. Why the heck was Y/n so happy when she was literally just staying in her room all day yesterday crying? When Y/n finally finished making her cereal and headed over to the table where we were all sitting, she began eating, the giant smile never leaving her face.
"Um Y/n? Why so happy all of a sudden?" Tord asked, breaking the silence. Y/n looked in his direction with cereal all over her cute little face.
"It's because Daddy's coming home today!" Everyone instantly got frowns on their faces with a spark of confusion in their eyes.
"What do you mean 'Daddy' is coming home today?" Matt asked, taking glances between all of us and Y/n.
"Daddy said he was coming home today! He told me so!" Y/n said plainly as she put her finished cereal bowl in the sink along with the spoon.
"He told you so?" I asked. How in hell does that happen?
"Mmmhmm! So I'll be waiting at the door until he comes!" We watched painfully as Y/n skipped playfully over to the front door, grabbing Edd's old green hoodie from the coat rack, held it in her tiny child hands and started waiting at the front door.
We all sighed sadly, knowing very well that Edd was not going to come back. But we can't just tell Y/n that, it'll break her heart. And we can't have Y/n wait there at the front door for hours thinking that her father was actually coming back.
I think I felt the same way when my father had died from a bear shooting at him with a gun after Matt gave the bears guns. I had prayed for my dad to come back and waited for him to come back. My mom had to break the news to me, that he wasn't coming back.
"What are we gonna do, Tom? We can't have Y/n waiting at the door forever for her dad to come." Ford said, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Don't you think I know that Commie?! I'm trying to think!" I snapped.
"Well think that little jehovah's witness brain of your harder!" He growled back at me.
"GUYS! Yelling at each isn't going to help Y/n! Why don't I talk to her? I'm sure Y/n would love to talk to her beautiful and handsome uncle that is clearly her favorite?" Matt interrupted out argument.
Tord and I knocked Matt over the head for his stupidity and he winced in the double pain he got.
"Why don't you talk to her Tom? Y/n seems pretty attached to you whenever you always comfort her. She even stuck to you like glue at..Edd's funeral." Tord seemed a little hesitant when he was mentioning Edd and the funeral.
"That's only because you guys were saying 'hello' or 'goodbye' at Edd's relatives and she only knew us so she had nowhere else to go. Besides, I don't really want to tell her about how he's not coming back. It'll break her heart." I replied sadly.
"Well it's either we talk to her or she figures out on her own when Y/n realizes that her dad isn't coming back." Tord said, finishing our argument while crossing his arms.
I took a glance at Y/n, who was still smiling and waiting patiently at the door. Her smile was everything that could even make the most depressed people on Earth be happy again. But this had to be done.
I got up from the table and walked over to Y/n. I patted her back lightly and smiled down at her.
"Hey kid, I uh.. see you're holding your dad's old sweater." I said to her, nervously.
"Yeah! I want to make sure he's warm when he comes home after his long trip!" Y/n mentioned.
"Long trip?" I asked.
"Mmhm! He said he was on a work trip and he was coming home today! Isn't that exciting?!" I sighed sadly and started to explain to Y/n.
"Kid, listen, your dad's...not coming back. He's dead Y/n, Edd's gone." Y/n's smile turned into a frown and her eyes started to water.
"No! That's not true! My daddy's coming home today! He said so! He's coming home! HE'S COMING HOME!" Y/n yelled with tears running down her cheeks.
"Y/n, we all wish he could come home. We all wish that we could just relax on the couch while watching 'The Children' on the TV, knowing that your father was okay. But he's dead, and we have to move on with it and live the rest of our lives. Edd would want that." I explained.
"You're lying! Daddy's not dead! H-He's just at work, that's all! But he's coming home today! He is!" By now, Y/n was full on sobbing while holding her tiny body around my waist. It broke my heart seeing her like this.
"I'm so sorry Y/n, but your dad just... isn't coming home. I'm sorry." I felt four more arms wrap around us and opened my eyes to see Matt and Tord hugging us as well.
"It's okay, Y/n. Everything will be be alright." Matt whispered into Y/n's ear.
"Yes, it's going to be okay." Tord said.
"Edd may be gone, but his world will keep on spinning."
