Adam’s thoughts were clouded with mixed judgments about Lexander and what he should do next to ensure no word of their relations came out. He didn’t need the townspeople thinking of him sleeping with the monstrous creatures he hunted and slayed.

Caught up in his thoughts and not paying attention, Kate caught sight of his friend who seemed to be lost in his own head. He wondered why and hesitated to call him out until he spotted a bear trap in Adam’s path. He lifted his bow and pulled an arrow out of its quiver and aimed towards Adam. The arrow flew through the air and pierced the ground before Adam’s feet, where the bear trap cracked shut, snapped the arrow in two.

Adam jumped back, his back hitting a tree as he eyed the broken arrow in the trap. “What in Gods name?” he muttered.

“You were distracted Adam, if not for me, you would have lost your leg.” Kate slung his bow over his shoulder as he approached him. “If not for me, you would be out of a job.”

Adam tsked and pushed up from the tree. “Thank you, I had been taken by my thoughts.”

“Clearly, what was it that distracted you?”

Adam sighed, he had to think of a lie to make Kate less curious about his train of thought. “The kill…” he began. Kate waited for an explanation, “I could have sworn the wolf was crying before I killed it.”

Kate took a second before he replied. “Well, I could see why that would have you so off guard, but let it not bother you. The beast is long dead.” He turned and started back for the HQ.

“The beast was once human.” Adam said, swearing in the next breath as he heard the words that came from his mouth.

Kate arched his brow and turned back to his friend. “Yes, but they are human no more. Those murderous creatures weren’t human anymore, Adam and they sealed their fate by slaughtering innocent townspeople. Nothing about that is humane.” Adam saw the stern look on Kate’s face and nodded stiffly as his bit his tongue. That bloody Vampire was making him question his own profession.

“Alright. Now if you’re done sympathizing about a blood thirsty beast, can we get on with our reports of last night and begin our patrol.” He turned and left Adam to follow after him.

Kalson was half asleep on his chair, his boots up on the table when the door of the Hunters Headquarters slammed shut and jolted him from his sleep. He reached for his rifle, cocked it and had pointed it towards his open office door—stopping Adam and Kate in their wake. “Oho, don’t shoot Mr. Thomal or you’ll kill the best archer in town.”

Adam rolled his eyes and brushed pass Kate.

“Yeah, thankfully he was aiming at you and not me.” Adam remarked.

Kalson burst out in laughter at Kate’s reaction to Adam’s sly words. The blond man snared at his fellow Hunter as Kalson uncocked his gun.

“Yeah, yeah, go to hell.” He grumbled.

The two men laughed and Adam patted Kate on the back. “There, there, your manliness is strong enough to endure a blow or two every so often.”

Kalson snickered and stood up, putting his gun back down. “So, men are y’all reports ready?”

They replied yes in unison as they handed over their paperwork to Kalson who walked over to the shut door of their secretary and knocked thrice. “Come in.” a sweet voice answered. Kalson combed a hand back through his ginger locks and pushed the door in. “Mornin’ Darlene, I’ve got the Werewolf attack reports from the boys.”
