Chapter 12

You woke up screaming. You didn't know if you may have been screaming even before you regained consciousness, because Evie was the first thing you saw when you opened your eyes and she was holding your down. Your whole body screamed in pain and you felt it hard to breathe, so it only made you dizzy, when you used all your air for screaming.

"Y/n, please calm down! You are only making your injuries worse!" Evie said with a panicked expression. You felt some hands on your legs as well; when you tried to kick your heels into the madras you appeared to lie on. Henry was standing over you like Evie and looked at you in horror. But you were too busy with being in pain to think about how other people was feeling at that moment and the fact that you weren't wearing much clothe.

"I'll give her some pain relief." Said a third person that was out of your very narrow dizzy view. Your whole body screamed 'yes please!' and the moment after a nurse stepped in between Evie and Henry with a huge syringe in her hand. You panted of exhaustion. Your lugs couldn't take any more screaming, but it was like you just couldn't stop. It was a reflex to the pain. The nurse took your arm and with a skilled hand pressed the needle into the pit of your elbow and emptied the syringe. Eventually the pain relief worked and first then Evie and Henry let go of you and you could give your lugs a break from the screaming and panting. It work for big part of your body and it made you relax a bit. You could now concentrate enough to focus on other things than only the pain. For the first time you notice that your skin wasn't really the colour that skin use to have. You were covered in blue, purple and even black bruises everywhere on your body. One of your ankles was swollen and red and you didn't dare to think about if it was actually broken. You were wearing some kind of white nightgown that wasn't yours, but the blood that was covering it must be yours.

"Feeling better?" Evie finally said and bit her lip. She knew that the answer was no, but you wouldn't know what to say either, if it was you in her position.

"No." You hoarsely said and tried not to move. Now that the minor pain all over was gone, you could really feel your chest hurting. It hurt just by breathing and even more from the vibration of your voice. It didn't make it better that you were laying in your bed in the train and jumped up and down all the time, because of the uneven railways of London.

"You were lucky that I was in the theatre. Even though you are undercover as an actress, you need to be armed in some way." Evie said harshly but her face still looked somehow panicked and you could see she felt sorry for you. You didn't say anything. You just looked at her.

"Give her some space. She has been through a lot! She needs to have some fluids and a lot of rest." Said the nurse with some kind of southern accent. This time you really got a look at her. She was a sweet looking woman in her best age. She was wearing a white bonnet and a matching white apron that was, like your nightgown, covered in blood.

"How bad is it?" You murmured, unable to speak very loudly, but it still hurt when you spoke. The nurse looked at you and gave you a small smile.

"You are lucky that nothing I broken. Your ankle is very badly sprained and a few of your ribs were bend in both sides. It's not as painful but takes a lot longer to heal, darling. I already stitched the places that needed it, so don't move around too much, or you may open the cuts again. The rest of it are bruises." She said and frowned when she looked you up and down again.

"Thank you for coming here on such a short notice, Miss Nightingale." Said Henry and offered her his hand.

"Nonsense! You helped me before, now I can repay you and help you as well." She said and took his hand before they both left you alone with Evie. She sat down on the edge of your bed, being very careful not to move around too much and curse you even more pain.
