When I was officially on my own and drove away with the image of my friends and team members waving to me in my rearview mirror, I wasn't hit with the predictable wave of nausea. Instead, I stepped on the gas pedal with powerful determination. My thoughts were on Louis and his safety. Of course I was nervous, but I had to remind myself, "I am freaking Kelly Tomlinson." I am one of the top agents in my age group. I can handle anything that is thrown at me.
I hope.
I was naturally a protective human being. I hated those that used other peoples' weaknesses for their own advantages. I hated when people picked on others for their own comfort. And what I hated the most is when people threaten the lives of individuals. So when shit like that happens, I take control of the situation and to the best of my ability, I try to turn the situation back around. Now that my brother was involved and has resulted to being a victim, my defensive personality was at its all time high. I have never felt so driven to complete a mission.
The heart of London came into view quickly. Not realizing how fast I was flying down the highway, I was surprised to see that I had already arrived at the London Police Department before 8 a.m when they were expecting me.
I locked the car behind me, making sure everything was secured. I only brought the necessities in with me. My phone and badge. Usually I would bring a weapon for security but seeing as I was entering a police department, that would be pointless because they would only take it from me anyway.
The lobby was quiet with aroma of freshly brewed cheap coffee wafting through the air. My stomach quietly growled at the scent, basically begging me to fill it with more caffeine but I pushed the desire away to focus on what's more important.
I walked up to the front desk where a woman receptionist sat in a black police uniform. Her head was tilted sideways so that the telephone could rest between her shoulder and her ear. A pen in her right hand was twirling between her thumb and pointer finger absent mindedly. Her dull tone and the occasional role of her eyes indicated to me that this was not a work call. The fact that she also said "Mom" gave it away. I waited patiently to the side until she was done.
The officer's eyes lit up when she saw me approach. She smiled more to herself than to me and muttered a goodbye to her mother before hanging up the phone. She looked at me and breathed out a hefty sigh.
"Thank god, I thought I was never going to get off the phone with her," she said. She sat straighter in my seat bringing into view her name tag that was hidden when she bent at an odd angle. Officer Brooks. "What can I do for you?"
I grinned at her friendly welcoming. Usually those who worked in the office for a police firm instead of being out in the field were cranky, especially in the early morning on a weekday. Seeing Officer Brooks with a warm grin on her face and a good-witted attitude was a nice surprise and left me with a good feeling about this meeting.
Officer Brooks was young. 24 maybe. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a tight bun on the back of her head. Her face was fuller and her fair toned skin was soft. Light bags were lined beneath her eyes from an early wake up call but they were beginning to vanish as the day continued on. Although she'd probably much rather be out on the streets fighting crime, she was also a great fit as a receptionist.
"Hi. My name is Agent Kelly. I have a meeting with Sargent Davis at eight." I said.
"Oh!" Her eyebrows rose and her blue eyes once again brightened. "Yes we've been expecting you." Brooks stood up and leaned over the counter for my hand. I was a little taken off guard by the enthusiasm but quickly regained myself and shook her hand. I tried to keep the grin on my face. "I've been looking forward to meeting you for a while. From what I've been told, you're kind of a bad-ass."
