I woke up to my phone vibrating underneath me, my ringtone muffled by my stomach. I groaned and tried to sit up. I knew I looked like a mess. My hair was in my face, my eyelashes were clumped together from the mascara, and my clothes were wrinkly and disheveled. But at least my headache went away!
I looked out the window. The sky was dark with glowing stars poking through it. The clock to my right said 10:02 pm. I've been asleep for almost six hours.
"Shit," I mumbled incoherently to myself and pulled my cell phone out from under me. It was warm. The caller ID told me it was my dad which also told me not to answer. But I knew if I didn't, I would be seriously screwed. I slid my finger across the screen and pressed the phone against my ear. "Hello." It came out muffled after I slapped my face back down onto the pillow.
"Kelly. That is not how you answer the phone when you see it's someone like me calling."
I rolled my eyes. Something I didn't know you could do with your eyes close until now.
"You sound like a nagging old woman." I lifted my head so that I was more audible.
"Kelly Marie." My father scolded me.
"Sorry." No I wasn't. "What's up? Isn't it past your bedtime or something?"
"I had to stay late at the office tonight because of a very ... difficult phone call sent my way from Sargent Davis of the London Police Department."
I scoffed. That bitch.
"Dad, Davis was being completely uncooperative and demeaning both times I have been with him. It's not like I punched him in the nose which is what I should have done. I just made his life a little more challenging."
"It's giving our agency a bad reputation."
"Our agency already has a bad reputation. Sargent Davis made sure to tell me that the first time I met him."
"I don't care Kelly. You give Sargent Davis the respect he deserves -"
"I am!"
"For once in your god damn life will you just do as I say? Sargent Davis is your superior. Treat him like it!"
"Once in my life?" Now I was sitting up straight. I felt my face heating up from anger and my temper ready to blow. "Are you fucking serious? The reason I'm in this mess is because I listened to you!"
"You listen to me Kelly -"
"No. You listen to me. I had a really horrible fucking day, which by the way - thank you for asking. Okay? I don't have the time or energy to deal with your bullshit. So if you're gonna call and give me pointless advice, do it tomorrow cause I'm not listening."
I hung up the phone and felt my blood boiling in my veins. I was mad at Sargent Davis. I was mad at my father for not asking about me, my side of the story, or even how Louis was doing. But mostly because he wasn't giving me the credit I deserved. I was mad that this phone call reminded me of everything I was annoyed with before going to sleep. I wanted to scream, go back in time six years so I can say no to my dad after he asked me to join him.
I chucked my phone at the wall. The phone didn't crack but a dent was left in the wall I knew I would have to pay for but at the moment I didn't care.
I felt the energy drain quickly. My heart slowed down and my head started buzzing. I sat down at the end of the bed and combed my fingers through my hair. Okay Kelly. New day...sorta. New strategy.
