Rainy Night

The rain pattered loudly outside, hitting the window as it came down from the dark sky above. It was loud, but not enough to distract Tyler from his work as he sat at his desk at home.

It was late, around 11:00 at night. He looked up from the papers in front of him when he felt the vibration of his phone on the desk, only a few inches away from his hand. He flipped it over so he could read the screen. He sighed and flipped it back over when he saw that it was some random number that he didn't know, adjusting his glasses with a soft huff.

Tyler kept scribbling away on paper, trying to finish his work so he wouldn't have to deal with it later. He got his wish when he finished writing. It was now about 12:00 in the morning, and Tyler was extremely tired. He stood up, putting his papers in a safe place. He pushed in the chair at his desk and walked to his dresser.

He grabbed a new pair of underwear and a shirt and went into the bathroom. He turned on the water, making it almost too hot for his liking, before he stripped and stepped in. The steaming water felt good on his achy and sore muscles. He'd been up for too long, working for too long, but he was waiting.

He left the water running, letting it spray against his skin. He stood there in the warm water, ignoring the cold weather outside. He was waiting for a knock, a ring, maybe even a vibration of his phone on the counter in the steamed-up bathroom.

Tyler turned off the water and stepped out of the shower, drying off his hair so it wouldn't drip water onto the floor or onto his clothes, then he dried off his body. He pulled on a pair of gray sweatpants, not putting on a shirt. He put his glasses on and ran a hand through his damp hair.

Tyler checked the clock. 12:57. 57 minutes into the new morning.

Tyler sighed. He made his way downstairs and decided to brew up a cup of coffee. After he made it he sipped on it, not caring that it was black without any sweetener. He'd stay up, all the same.

Tyler spent hours waiting around, just playing games on his phone, before he finally decided to finish the pot of coffee he'd made and go back upstairs.

Up the stairs he walked, rubbing at his eyes under his glasses. He set his coffee mug on his desk and sat down. He pulled back up to the wooden piece of furniture and opened up his laptop. He began to get ahead on his work, then he got very far ahead on his work.

At 4:28 in the morning, Tyler heard his doorbell ring. He slammed his laptop shut and ran down the stairs as fast as he could. He stopped right in front of the front door. He ran a hand through his hair then unlocking and opening the front door.

There he stood, with short, brown hair and a gentle smile on his face. He had a pair of glasses on his face, his nose slightly red. He was set from standing in the rain, a suitcase by his side, a backpack with a strap around his arm.

Tyler pulled him inside, out of the cold rain and wind, and kissed him. It wasn't desperate, not lustful or wanting anything more, not hungry. It was loving, extremely caring and hopeful. Passion of pure romance, with no further intention than what it already was.

"I missed you," Tyler said, holding him close. He let go, but only for a moment to pull in his things then shut and lock the door. Immediately after, he was recaptured into a tight hug.

"I missed you too, Tyler. God, I missed you so much."

Another kiss and then they pulled away from one another, gasping for air they had stolen from one another.

"Come on," Tyler said, grabbing the hand of the man in front of him. He grabbed the suitcase and lead him up the stairs, taking him to their bedroom.

"Tyler, were you waiting for me to come home? How long have you been up?"

He looked at the desk, and then fully realized the amount of old coffee cups he had sitting there. One for each night, plus a few.

"I didn't know the day you were coming, but I just wanted to be awake when you got home."

"Oh, Tyler," he said softly, cupping his cheek and kissing his lips. "You didn't have to. You know that."

     "I wanted to."

"Let's get to sleep, okay? I've had a long flight and I'm jet lagged, and I'm sure you could use the rest."

     "Okay. Okay. Thanks, Craig."

Craig smiled. "Anything for my fiancé. Now, go on, get into bed."

Craig undressed into his underwear, and Tyler pulled off his sweatpants. They crawled into bed, holding one another, listening to the heartbeat of the other.

     "Tyler?"

     "Hmm?"

"How much do you love me?"

     "More than you'll ever know."

     "I love you."

"And I love you, more than you'll ever know."

The two eased into a simple slumber, curled up in each other's arms.
